I had the ink system failure message happen when I installed a new set of cartridges.  Went through the reset process, then contacted HP who basically told me I'nm out of warranty, the ink head system is not replacable and I need a new printer.  They were nIce enough to then offer me a discounted printer which was for more then I paid for the printer in the first place!.  I searched around on the web, found a post suggesting that it could be a defective ink cartridge.  I then put the old cartridges back in, it cycled through, it told me to replace the three color cartridges, which I did and miraculously, the printer now works.

I find it reprehensible that HP's solution to what appears to be a common problem with this model is to junk a 16 month old printer, including the brand new set of cartridges which aren't compatble with new printers and buy a new one rather then work to actually resolve the issue.  I will use this printer until it actually dies then never buy another HP product.

Thank you to the author this post. I just had the exact same problem. I replaced the Yellow cartridge that was included with a new Yellow and the printer worked just fine. It is very annoying that this problem is apparently well known to HP, but has not been fixed.

How do you call HP?

same problem here.  Got this message "There is a problem with the printer or ink system.  Turn printer off, then on.  If problem persists, contact HP.  0x610000f6"

Then after turning off and on (properly, I might add) I get this message:  "Improper shutdown.  To avoid damage, use the On button to shut down.  Do not use a power strip or wall switch to shut down."

But my printer makes a knocking sound when the carriage is moving, especially when printing several copies, which in turn throws the print off to the left margin.  I've done the alignment test...it's unsuccessful.  I've cleaned printheads, aligned printheads...I've done all the troubleshooting mentioned here, following the online instructions.  I was on the phone with HP support for well over an hour, most of which I was on hold while he "figured it out" and performing all the steps I had already done. That call was a waste of time as he thought he solved it when I printed a page.  I explained to him it wasn't fixed and then he says my problem is not fixable.  Then he offered me a replacement (refurbished) for $117 and a 2 yr warranty.  (Mine is 1.5 yrs old)

No thanks, not only do I NOT want the same printer, I'm going with another brand, perhaps Brother (had one for years before this HP 6700) or Epson.  Whatever I buy, it will not be HP that's for sure.

Just had this for the first time on a 8600 that is a year or two old.  Had non-HP ink cartridges in it.  Tried to isolate if one of them was bad but could not.  I replaced them all and no more error message.

Well i had , the dreaded Ink system problem , i tried the power off solution and it did not work.

A little more searching and i found the master reset.

I kept getting the error message which would not let me get any further so i opened the front hatch and removed the Black ink.

I then powered down.

Turned back on keeping the power button pressed for a few seconds.( blinked two times)

Released the power button and pressed the home button (top left) and the return button (botton Left)

and repeated another time pressing both.

Eventually i got into the service menu and selected (Full Reset) and hit OK

It started to reset then came back on and asked me to put the ink in , i opened the hatch and inserted the black ink.

This then went through first setup , asking for language etc.

When this finished it printed a setup page out.

The dreaded Ink system fail had gone

Hope this works for others.

Maybe it was a stroke of luck or the fact i fooled a firmware reset , but my printer is back from the dead.

I will add that i replaced ALL the Ink one by one (non hp) and still got the error until i did as above.

Thanks for all the advice, I was having the same problem and I was able to correct by replacing the Yellow cartrage (Although I had just replaced all cartrages just a week ago).   I've been using HP printers for over 20 years and have always used them until I wore them out;  that is until about 4 years ago.  In the past 4 years I have had 3 printers my most reciant being my HP4600 which is not a year old.  Until I found this post, I was ready to change to another brand, but my question is where is the quality control on the print cartrages?  Doesn't see to be much based on all the post with cartrage issues with the 4600.
