Envy 4520

Are there any problems using the 4520 or 4650 with Windows 10? 

The 4520 and 4650 both appear to be able to print without the color cartridge installed.  Is that correct?   If I do 99% black only printing (maybe 100%), and therefore print without the color cartridge installed, will that be bad for the printer or print quality?  Does printing without the color cartridge installed prevent the inkjet printer head cleaning process?  Is that bad? 

If printing w/o the color cartridge is not good, and the printer will likely sit idle (turned off) 6 months a year, would an all-in-one laser printer be a better choice?  Does HP have one in the same (or close) price range?  For someone who prints probably around 100 pages per year, needs an all-in-one, but nothing fancy, and wants low cost of owership (printer and ink) for life of printer, which do you recommend - inkjet or laser?  And why?

Hi John,

You should be fine to print with only one ink cartridge installed on the ENVY 4520. I'm unable to find an ENVY 4650.

Another very cost-effective option on ink (that would keep two ink cartridges installed) is the HP Instant Ink program (which is avilable for the ENVY 4520). For the minimal printing you do, you'd be safe with the lowest cost option of $2.99 a month (unlimited ink use!).

My mistake, when I asked about the 4650, I meant the Officejet 4650.  Other than the ADF on the 4650, what else is different (or better) than the 4520?  Thanks!

Yep! The OfficeJet 4650 has an ADF and is also fax-capable. It looks like those are the only differences.
