I have an Envy 5640 and I would like to use the scan to email function from the printer.
The printer is on an internal network with no access to the internet, so I need to configure it to use a local SMTP server which should be simple, but cannot find any way of doing that.
Thanks,

Hi,
The HP Envy 5640 offer scanning to an email via HP Web Services, meaning an internet connection is required to access HP Servers to use this feature:
The printer do not offer direct digital filing capabilities such as a direct connection to an SMTP server.
There are higher end Officejet or Laserjet printers who capabale to connect directly to an SMTP server, such as the HP Officejet Pro 8710 or the HP Laserjet Pro M277 Series.

Shlomi

That's a shame. There is no way I'm connecting an unsecure device inside my network directly to the internet. Maybe you could consider adding that in a firmware update? The SMTP protocol has been widely used for over 40 years, so your engineers should be on top of that one by now.

Hi,
There are many different printers, each pritner provide different features and being provided with a clear specifications..
Envy printers are intended for home usage, as a such offer different features accordingly.
There are many different Officejet or Laserjet pritners which meant to provide such business envoirnment support such as aconnecting to an SMTP server, you should check the printer features prior buyung a one to get one who meets your needs.
Direct digital filing capabilities are only offerd for select models, I'm not an HP Employee but HP will not likely update a product to eet a sopecific need..

You mean this page? http://www8.hp.com/au/en/products/printers/product-detail.html?oid=6583037#!tab=specs
"Minimum system requirements: CD-ROM/DVD drive or Internet connection".
I have a CD-ROM drive so, according to that, do not need an internet connection.
"Digital sending standard features:
Scan to email [via printer control app]
From software: Scan to file
Scan to email"
No mention anywhere on there on having to create an account and send any scanned email via a third-party account.
> such business envoirnment support such as aconnecting to an SMTP server
Again, you seem to consider SMTP a "business" function. I consider it as the most basic email protocol invented, and would expect (in the absence of any information to the contrary) any email-capable appliance to use it.
> HP will not likely update a product to eet a sopecific need.
No, I'm sure they won't. However, if they followed through on their puported commitment to open source and released the printer firmware, I'm sure there are many people out there who would.
So yes, there are further support documents (such as you linked) which go in to more detail and I could have done more research, but the main product page, which is quite extensive, makes no mention of any of this and just lists "scan to email" as a feature.
For anyone else reading this who is interested, Brother printers appear to support this in their most basic printer/scannners:
"In order to use the Scan to E-mail Server option, the Brother machine will need to be connected to a network and have access to a POP3 and SMTP server."
