I cannot print in black; only color.  The color cartridge is low.  Will the printer print black with a low color cartridge?

Thanks for taking an interest in the HP Support Forums! After reading your post I see that your HP Deskjet F4580 printer is not printing in black. I would like to help you out with this issue today.

  • Check the paper.
  • Check the print settings.
  • Check the Print in Grayscale setting.
  • Check ink levels and replace low or empty cartridges.
  • Print and evaluate an extended self-test report and troubleshoot defects.

Click here and follow the steps mentioned in the document to fix this issue.

(Note: Though the title of the document is different, these steps should fix the issue)

Let me know if that works.

Cheers.

Thank you for responding.  I have done all the trouble shooting you suggested before I posted.  I was hoping that it was an ink cartridge problem that required both cartridges to be full.  If not then I am at a loss on what the probem is.  I am thinking hardware.

Thanks for the reply.

Superb job on trying the different steps to isolate the issue.

It seems to be a hardware issue.

I request you to contact HP Phone support for further assistance on this.

Cheers.
