I have spent 3 weeks trying to figure this out on my own bc my case mgr lewis has no clue. Only to keep telling me I can't do this I can't do that, he also informs me as of today there is absolutely nothing else that can be done to assist me. Then the level 3 tech Frances tells me he does not know how to do this and he is positive 100% thas the entire staff does not know how to do a full complete hard mfg reset to original. I have such a hard time believing this.I said "really ? no one there knows how to do this ?" This is an hp product. who can i get this info from then ? what i'm trying to accomplish is to be able to use the rest of my set-up cartridges that i have. i have 4 complete brand new xl sets and 2 blk xl left . I have been using them right along, as one depletes, I take out the old set-up cartridge and replace it with a new set-up cartridge. Now what is interesting is that I have taken out the old set up put in a new blk xl, I'm told i cannot use set-up cartridges. ok i take out the new set up put in the old set up which is not the original set up it is probably the 3rd. It takes it fine and the system gives me no errors except that it is empty and obviously i cannot use it. take it out put in the new. get the same error. ugh ! so it goes on ... Never have I had an issue, until this last update. So, what i want to be able to do is somehow bypass the microchips on the cartridges, is there a way ? or do a complete full hard reset on the printer, is there a way ? ive tried doing a partial/full reset that does not work as far as the cartridge issue some how it i still retaining some memory. I have tried what hp is calling a full reset by turning the unit off, unplugging the unit from both the back of the unit and wall. wait 15 sec and plug back in. not too sure what this does but it is not full reset (not even a partial reset). So, please if anyone has any ideas on how to perform this properly please let me know. i've seen something about holding the # and 9 at the same time and unplug, thats impossible to do with this machine as it is a touch screen and you do not have buttons to touch. with a touch screen you an only touch one button at time. you can obviously touch 2 at a time but the system will only recognize 1 being touched at a time. so that option is useless. yes there is the obvious to go out and buy ink but i have so many perfectly good ink cartridges that are still good, under warranty until the end of this year. I hv been hp customer for almost 35 yrs. But btwn this and another issue they are pushing me out really quickly. Any assistance would be greatly be appreciated. I really have to get this working. i have also contacted hp executive offices and have been speaking with Janet because i just find it ridiculous that tech and case mgrs cannot help with their own products. so i'm reaching out to anyone who can help me - even an hp employee who may possibly know what hey are talking about bc everyone i contact doesn't seem to know what they are talking about, which i find very sad !! I love hp products but i'm finding quality and customer service has just diminished over the years.

Hi there owners of HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus.
To get access to the support menu, you do not need to turn the printer off and on again. To locate the return /back arrow, press the right arrow on the right hand side of the touch screen. This will show the return/back arrow (like an anti-clockwise arrow). Asyou go back to the home menu, this return/back arrow is no longer visible. Just slkowly press the spot where the return/back arrow was showing 4 times. You should be able now to see the support menu.
Beware, the full factory reset seems to require a new set of setup cartridges for the printer to work again. If this is not the case, please let me know how to bypass the setup screens.
Thanks

Thank you but this does NOT work. this only gives you this option to do a partial or semi/full reset. I have contacted them numerous times to remove what they have listed as it does NOT give you the option to do a FULL reset. I wish it did. This is the proceedure I used to do the semi/full reset that did not work. The reset itself worked, but not for what I was looking for it to do. Somehow the printer is still retaining memory that I have previously done a setup before, so I need to do a complete hard wipe of all memory to get it back to original specs if there is a way to do that. That is why I'm looking to do a full hard mfg to original specs reset.
Thanks for trying

The only good solution I found was to go out and purchase another 8600 from Staples and buy the 2-year warranty. That way (when it craps in less than a year (like mine did) they send you a coupon for another printer. And hey, what's with the serial number on the back of the printer not being the same as the serial number that the printer reports? HP said my printer was out of warranty but I found my receipt that said I had a month to go.

01. Insert the old cartridge
02. Tap return arrow (left side of menu window) 4 times. Support menu is displayed
03. Select support menu
04. Right arrow 3 times to the system configuration menu
05. Click OK
06. Right arrow 2 times to the ink initialization status
07. Select OK 2 times (Ink Initialization: set it and clear it)
08. Pull power plug, NOT power button (shut down)
09. Wait 1 minute
10. Plug in and Power on
11. YES to all messages that appear.

For AlBrunelle: Thank you for digging into this for all of us. My replacement 8600 is still ticking along so I'm saving your solution for any future misbehavior on it's part (my problem was a failure to power off with the power switch and when software auto-timer shutdown was selected, the stupid thing shut down and never came back to life!).
The problem I'm having now is feeding from tray one is iffy unless I use just plain paper or envelopes. It's having problems picking up cardstock and some other heavy papers.
