During installation I get a fatal error timeout after I have connected the USB and the progress bar reaches 99%. I have restarted the computer and also restarted the printer with the same results. I have also changed the port for the USB. When I connect the USB, the computers makes the sound of a device being connected.

Hi @Bob4 ,
I see that you are having issues installing the printer, you are getting a fatal error after connecting the USB cable. I would like to help you out today.
Please follow the steps below to see if we can get you up and running.
Disconnect the USB cable.
Run the uninstall from the CD.
Touch the Windows key and the E key to access the computer window.
Right click on the CD for the printer, left click open in a new window, double click on uninstall.
I would disable all the start up programs and temporarily turn off the Antivirus Software to see if there is a program interfering in the back ground. How to use MSCONFIG . Click on the start up tab and click disable all.
Download, save and then run the latest drivers. Don't Connect the USB cable until prompted during the install.
HP LaserJet Pro 200 color MFP M276nw Drivers.
Right after connecting the USB cable, follow this document immediately so you won't get the Fatal error again. A Fatal Error Displays During Software Installation. After this is done the installation should continue.
Test the printer.
Then you will have to go back and enable the startup programs and turn the Antivirus Software back on again.
What operating system are you using? How to Find the Windows Edition and Version on Your Computer.
Please let me know the results.
Have a nice day!
Thank You.

Hi @RSoftah,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums! I understand that you are having issues installing the printer software on Windows 10. I will certainly do my best to help you.
Unlock Hidden Administrator Account and install the printer on this account:
Note: Don't connect the USB cable in until prompted during the install.
Go to your Start menu and under the 'search programs and files' box type CMD.
CMD will populate as a search option above, just right click on it and 'run as administrator'.
Once CMD (Command Prompt) opens, type net user administrator /active:yes and hit enter.
Next, close CMD and restart your computer.
When your computer comes on log into the new account that should show. It will be called Administrator and will not have a password on it.
If your computer automatically logs into your account after restart than go to your start menu click the arrow beside 'shutdown' and choose 'switch user'. Now log into the Administrator account we just unlocked.
Under the Administrator account, install the printer software.
Test the printer.
To turn off the Admin account start back at step 1 and type in net user administrator /active:no.
If you are still having issues, please try the steps listed in this document, HP Printers - A 'Fatal Error' Displays During HP Software Installation (Windows). Let me know the error code in the Event Viewer.
How is the printer connected?
Please keep me posted. If you appreciate my efforts, please click the 'Thumbs up' button below. Thank you.

I, too am having this problem. I have downloaded the drivers from the HP website, I begin the install, connect the printer via usb when instructed to, then I wait, after about at least 10 minutes it gets to 99% and then gives the fatal error, instructs me to reboot and try it again.
I have been trying this with an administrator account.
I've tried following the above instructions, however where it says "Right after connecting the USB cable, follow this document immediately so you won't get the Fatal error again. " The link that follows doesnt seem to be working anymore. Is this docment still availble? maybe you could repost the contents, or any additional pointers would be appreciated.
