Hi. I'm having the following issue when i turn on my Laserjet 500 color M551:

Firmware Error: 99.09.67. Not Bootable

I tried to update the firmware using the TCP download and USB thumbdrive options but they didn't work either.

Also i got an error with the USB thumbdrive option: "Download Error. Unsurppoted bundle". I got bdl file from here:

Hi.

I have some recommendations you can follow to try to correct your problem.

First, Power Off the printer, remove the formatter board (the assembly where you connect the thumbdrive) and check that the Solid State Drive looks properly connected. Reinstall the formatter and turn the printer ON.

Based on what you described, the printer will boot into a 99.09.67 Error.

When you are in the Error screen, you are actually in the BIOS of the printer.

+ Press the OK button and you should see a menu (the same one I believe you are navigating to load the code).

+ Go to Administrator -> Format Disk -> Press OK

+ Once done, connect the USB Thumbdrive previously loaded with the latest FW found in the HP.com web page (be sure the code is saved in the root partition of your drive, it must be a FAT16 or FAT32 file system.  Be sure the thumbdrive is a simple one and not a U3 type of drive -- the one that behave as a CD and as an external drive).

+ Go to the Download menu -> Load through USB thumbdrive --> OK

+ Pick the file with the code and press OK.

+ Once it finishes, power off the printer, remove the USB Thumbdrive and Power On the printer.

The printer should go to Ready after some minutes (there may be automatic powercycles while in this process).

Be aware that when formatting the disk, you will lose any third party application you may have.  You will need to reinstall them if that is your case.

If after these steps your printer still boots in a 99.09.67 error then probably your Solid State Disk is failing and you will need to call service for further actions.

Good luck !

Hi Chuyon_fouas,

I would suggest you to perform a partial clean step and then perform the Firmware udpate thruogh USB thumbdrive(ensure the USB drive is Formatter and it is of 8Gb or below) and then load the Firmware on to USB.

1. Turn the product on.
2. When the Ready, Data, and Attention LEDs are illuminated solid, press the Stop button.
3. Press the Down arrow button to highlight Administration, and then press the OK button.
4. Press the Down arrow button to highlight Partial Clean, and then press the OK button.
5. Press the OK button again.
6. Press the back arrow button to highlight Continue, and then press the OK button.

Thank you! I am an HP employee.

Hi,

1. Did the printer previously work, or is this issue "out of box"?

2. Check USB thumbdrive being used to install firmware,  it must be a FAT16 or FAT32 file system

3. Check the firmware file which you downloaded. It will be in zip format. Please extract only .bdl file to USB thumbdrive. Plug the USB thumbdrive to printer. Then turn on the printer, go to preboot menu to load the firmware.
Refer the following link to download the firmware file:

Hi,

For those its not working

I also came across with that error I tried everything  but didn't work.

Try removing the Solid State Memory drive/Harddrive from the Printer replaced it with another Solid State Memory drive/Harddrive(laptop - Formatted to FAT 32) and Downloaded the Firmware and installed it using the steps other people provided.

Hi,

I am getting this error msg also. I followed all your steps but am stuck on downloading firmware to printer. I am using an 8g thumbdrive, formatted FAT32. I can read the thumbdrive on other machines, but not on the printer. The USB port is on top of the printer in what looks like an added box, but I can't figure out how to remove it to check the USB port. Can you tell me how to remove it or suggest another way to download the firmware?

I faced the same error today.

followed the above steps but the scanner is initializing and taking forever

what could be the problem?

There should also be a hidden USB port on the formatter which you can try. Look closely for a peel off strip that covers a USB port.

I always have two different drives ready when I'm trying to load firmware on a printer since some drives will not work.
