My printer is printing documents with a grey vertical smudge about an inch think on the far right hand side of the page. I have changed the ink cartridge and run the cleaning programme - no change. Any ideas would be gratefully received.

Hi @Coff,

I understand that you are getting a grey vertical smudge on the right side, you replaced the toner and still have the same results. I can help you with this.

I have provided a document to go through the steps to see if that will resolve the issue. Make sure the paper type is selected properly in the print driver.

Troubleshooting Print Quality Issues.

Inspect the toner cartridge for damage:

1. Remove the toner cartridge from the product and verify that the sealing tape has been removed.
2. Check the memory chip for damage.
3. Examine the surface of the imaging drum on the bottom of the toner cartridge.
CAUTION: Do not touch the roller (imaging drum) on the bottom of the cartridge.

Fingerprints on the imaging drum can cause print-quality problems.
4. If you see any scratches, fingerprints, black toner or other damage on the imaging drum, replace the toner.
5. If the imaging drum does not appear to be damaged, rock the toner cartridge gently several times and reinstall it. Print a few pages to see if the problem has resolved.

Are you using Genuine HP Toner?

If the toner isn't causing the issue, then try running a few more cleanings through the printer. It may be toner inside the printer causing the smudging.

If the issue continues, please Contact HP Support for further assistance. Fill in the model number and the form to receive a case number for quicker assistance.
