Thanks Lars_A! I actually got a response from HP yesterday and they told me to call support, which i can't do since i live in Norway. I did some tinkering with the files and was going to put the older .bin file in with the new updater, but couldn't extract the older firmware. Also tried an older version of the mac os updater but that file has a different header.
And thanks Gordon, would be great to get this thing working!

If only I had found this forum *before* I did the update!!!!!
Alprov got it 100% right I came to the exact same conclusion. Some careless software developer has packaged the 1022N firmware for the 1022NW printer - not only are the N & NW images identical to the last bit - they both contain the printer name - you guessed it - "HP LaserJet 1022n" - note the missing W there!
So this new firmware update is downloading the wrong firmware and converting the NW to an N which is why it completely removes all WiFi settings.
I was able to turn RFU on (mine defaulted to OFF but not locked so could change the setting with the buttons).
However trying to downgrade by running the previous firmware updater dows not work - the new firmware evidently either blocks downgrades or fails because it thinks I'm trying to apply an NW image to an N printer which is what it thinks it is now! Unfortunately the old updater has the images embedded in the .exe and does not extract them like the new one so not so easy to get the old .bin file. I tried capturing it in the print spooler then editing it to remove the PCL header and what appeared to be some extra data at the end and renamed it to HP1022nw.bin then used the new updater to try to load it but that didn't work either - it just comes up with an error at the end and the printer does nothing
So HP we have defined exactly what the problem is for you - now you just need to get the updater repackaged and use the correct image for the HP1022nw.bin file in the package and then it should all be 100%. Cold resets and re-running the current update will NOT cure the problem because the problem is the update itself.
PLEASE take notice and get your developer that released this dud of an update to take some pride in his/her work and get it corrected asap. Meanwhile you SERIOUSLY need to withdraw the current update for the 1022nw and/or put up a big red warning on that page that there is a known problem with it, otherwise you're just going to keep on screwing up more customers' printers!
I'd be happy to test out a new image and confirm that it resolves the issue if you're looking for any volunteers ...
Thanks and looking forward to some real action on getting this resolved ...

You can extract the BIN file, from EXE file with this tool (or similar):
http://www.angusj.com/resourcehacker/
(Menu -> File/1009/1003, Action/Save Resource as a binary file ...)

Thanks b1520802 - handy tool!
Unfortunately the extracted binary still doesn't work. I think there is a difference between the files used by the new and old tools because the old one seems to contain a PJL header which the newer files don't seem to include.

I have exactly the same problem!
I applied the latest firmware update 20120928 in an attempt to see if HP had fixed an issue with connecting to WPA-PSK2 wireless networks, previously I used an older version of passcode which was compatible with the device - a bit of a pain but at least it worked.
Now I have no wireless capability - HP you have broken my printer, now please fix it!

Tried the support team today whose only advice was to install the same update again - apparantly, they do not have earlier versions of the firmware. Followed this link (https://h41268.www4.hp.com/live/index.aspx?qid=12350) to send a message to the MD - as advised on the phone as the only route forward. Lets see what comes back, but I am not holding my breath!

Hi chrislane,
Even though I gave my wlan-broken 1022nw to my niece a few weeks ago , I'm interested in seeing how HP will handle this. It doesn't look good this far.
I therefor followed your example and sent a message following your link.
I asked him to let someone respond to this therad.
If he got a few more bumps maybe he will react. I'm sure that his order to "fix this" will have a better impact on that no-good support that just wants this to "go away".
Just to give them a push: Samsung ML-2165W is a very good alternative...
