@brek81

Let me take a moment to thank you for posting on the HP Support Forums.

I understand that you have an HP Officejet 4500 All-in-One Printer and displays the message as "Start Printing" and then gets locked. I'd like to assist you with this case.

I would like to know the following information to assist you better:

  • Did any hardware changes take place on the printer (replacing the cartridges, paper jam, etc.)
  • Any software updates that happened?
  • The exact printer product model no. This link will help you to find the model no: http://hp.care/2bygf7l

Meanwhile, I recommend you to perform the following steps to isolate the issue and arrive at a fix:

  • Disconnect the power cable from the printer while the printer is still ON.
  • Disconnect any other cables if connected the printer.
  • Press and hold the printer’s power button for 15 seconds.
  • The printer should be directly connected to the wall outlet and not to a surge protector. Reconnect the power cable to print and the printer should power ON by itself. If the printer doesn’t power ON then please manually power it ON.
  • Please check if the printer can make a copy.

Also, print a self-test report from the printer. Refer to "Step 7: Print a diagnostic report" from this link.

If the printer still does not print then I suggest you perform a reset on the printer. I have sent you a private message with the steps to perform a reset.

Please feel free to let me know how it goes. Cheers!
