HP Officejet 4630 e all-in-one
macOS 10.12 Sierra

We have an HP all-in-one setup to work with an imac via USB.  I am able to print ok from the iMac, but I cannot scan.

When opening HP Scan on the iMac:

When I click Scan I get an error message:  "Scanner reported an error  The scanner failed to compete the scan.

Scanning to computer:

I enabled scan to computer on the printer.  When I select Scan from the printer front panel it asks me to select the computer (correct iMac name shows up) then start the scan.   The  scanner then tries to scan, but I get the same above error message on the iMac.   I get the following message on the printer front panel: "Connection Error  The computer is not responding .  Check if the USB cable is attached or network working proper, the try again."

The USB cable must be properly attached since I am able to print from the iMac

If I go to System Preferences, then select Printer & Scanners, then click Scan, then click Open Scanner, it sees the scanner, the document shows up, then I choose Size US Letter, Scan to desktop, format PDF then click scan, it then scans ok.

Welcome to the HP Forums. I would be happy to help you with your HP Officejet 4630 printer. I understand that you are getting USB scanning issue from your iMac and you have already done some preliminary troubleshooting.

Don't worry though as I have a few steps to determine the issue and find a solution as well,

  • Restart the computer and printer.
  • Remove and re-add the printer to the Mac.
  • Uninstall the printer driver and software.
  • Reinstall the latest drivers and software.
  • Reset the print system.

Click here and follow the document to perform above mentioned troubleshooting steps.

Let me know how it goes.

Cheers.
