Have a Color LaserJet 5500 printer with error 51.2. Error says to open and close front covers and the transfer unit. Then turn the printer off and back on. That didn't work. Error comes back during printer initalization.
What is the fix for this error?

Hello,
The error 51.2M is a laser error on this printer.
A cold reset might resolve this issue if the printer does not have a laser hardware error.
I have provided the steps below to help you perform the steps.
Caution: The printer settings will go back to the default factory setting.
Press the green (Select) button to continue.
Turn the printer off.
Perform a cold reset.
Turn the printer on.
Watch the control panel.
When the memory starts counting, press and hold the green (Select) button.
Continue holding the green (Select) button until the Ready, Data, and Attention lights flash once, and then stay on steady.
Release the (Select) button when the Ready, Data, and Attention light are on steady. The control panel will display SELECT LANGUAGE.
Press (Down Arrow) button once. The control panel will display COLD RESET.
Press (Select). The printer will perform a cold reset and then continue its power-on sequence.
If this message persists, contact an HP-authorized service or support provider.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply. I followed the procedures and after the cold reset it started to come up but when it got to the calibration section the 51.2 error came back on. I tried it 3 times hoping.
What is the next step?

Marty,
Sorry that this did not resolve the issue.
The error is indicating that there is a Magenta Laser problem that needs to be resolved by service.
You will need to contact an HP-authorized service or support provider.

It might help but if you do not have one you can just test with the cartridges in the printer.
I would do the following.
On the control panel go to
Diagnostic menu > then > Disable Cartridge Check
This will allow you to swap toner cartridges in the printer
Take the Cyan place it in Magenta Spot and vis-versa
If the error changes to 51.2C
Then you will know it is the toner cartridge causing the error if it stays at 51.2M it is the Laser Scanner.
This error is usually specific to the laser scanner for the specific color.
Please let me know if the above works.
