The HP 7520 works great during testing.

Each time I try to use it though, I wind up having to set it up again.

The most recent attempt was faxing.  When I finally got it to recognize that there was a phone line attached, I discovered that the web services weren't functioning.

I have spent the last 4 hours resetting ip addresses and dns servers, unplugging, resetting routers, ...  all to no avail.

If you want a printer that works when you need it and not just when you test it after setting it up, this is not the printer for you.

HP - please make your firmware updates findable.

No, Sandytech.  As I said, I was able to resolve the fax issue, only to discover a new issue.

I have since resolved that issue as well with a firmware update.

Unfortunately, the firmware update was hidden in the windows drivers section and I'm using OS X.  Firmware is internal to the device.  Whether I am using OS X or Windows or Linux should not matter as to whether or not I am presented with the information that it exists.

I  suspected that it was firmware and searched the site for "photosmart 7520 firmware" but that did not find the update.

I had to google "call hp support" to get a phone number since the website kept directing me to a web form instead of just listing a contact number and looking up my device by model number and serial number failed even though they were copied and pasted directly from the ews.

Once I called the number, selecting the option to speak with someone dealing with web services (eprint, etc) resulted in the system hanging up on me so I had to choose the option to speak with someone in the ink refill program in order to get a live person on the phone.  From there I was transferred around and hung up on several more times before finding someone who knew about the firmware update.

The point of my post is that this printer is unstable.  I wasted an entire day resolving issues that were caused by HP - issues that could have been resolved in minutes if the website were better organzed and this type of thing happens every single time I try to print.

Before I can print, I have to fix whatever has broken since the last time I printed.

The printer can't retain settings, but ironically, attemtping to set it to factory defaults through the printer menu does absolutely nothing besides showing me a message that it has been reset to factory defaults even though it hasn't.

I want a printer that works when I need it, not one that I have to fix every time I want to print to it.

I have found a solution though.  I'm buying a lexmark.

So I tried to scan from this thing today.  Scanning worked beautifully before I had to fix the fax and web services.  I was actually faxing a pdf that I had created from the scanner.

So the firmware "update" fixed the web services and broke the scanner software.

Do you guys at HP think these things all the way through?  It would appear the answer to that is a resounding "NO!"

Now when I try to scan with the HP Scan software, it scans as expected, but then doesn't let me save the file.   Notice in the screenshot how the save button isn't activated.

Great job guys!
