I just go the HP 8500 Pro Wireless yesterday. Love it! Love it! Love it! I set it up on my network with the ethernet port. I have 3 desktop computers and two wireless notebooks on the network. Install went smoothly on all but one machine, but that's another story.

I tried setting up the outgoing email server for the scan to email funtion but after putting in all the information the test connection keeps failing. It is a smtp server with my internet provider and I can send and receive email on my computer just fine from my outlook express. I am not sure what else to try. Does anyone have a suggestion for a solution.

Thanks in Advance

How is the printer connected to your network (wired LAN or wireless)?  What kind of router or wireless-router do you have?

Also, print out the Network Configuration Page and tell me the IP addresses for the Default Gateway, Primary and Secondary DNS servers.

i am using an airport extreme router.

the printer is connected wirelessly, although i have tried ethernet as well.

i took back the printer and got a new one, ruling out out of box failure.

Airport Extreme Router?  Good -- I know the problem.

We recently identified an issue where the Apple Airport Extreme wireless-routers do not set the Default Gateway IP address in our products.  Without the default gateway, the printer doesn't know how to route IP packets outside of the home local network.

The fix is quite simple -- set the Default Gateway IP address in your Officejet Pro to the address of the Apple wireless-router, which in your case would be 10.0.1.1.

Here are the specific details on how to do this:

  1. Open the printer's internal web pag by browsing to its IP address
  2. Select the green Networking tab
  3. Select Wireless (802.11) (located on the left hand netowrking pane)
  4. Select the green IPv4 Configuration tab
  5. Select Manual IP
    1. Enter 10.0.1.2 for the Manual IP Address
    2. Enter 255.255.255.0 for the Manual Subnet Mask
    3. Enter 10.0.1.1 for the Manual Default Gateway
  6. Select Manual DNS Server
    1. Enter 10.0.1.1 for the Manual Preferred DNS Server
  7. Select Apply

That should do the trick.

Here are HP's instructions to setup direct digital filing for the Mac.  Is it these instructions that you're having trouble with?

Here's the part for setting up direct digital filing using the printer's internal web configuration page:

Set up Scan to Network Folder with the Embedded Web Server

  1. Create a folder on a computer connected to the network.

  2. Share the folder.

NOTE: Make sure the folder preferences provide Read/Write access.

  3. Open the printer's internal web page by browsing to the printer's IP address.

  4. For this step, select either of the following options:

Option one: Click the Home tab, and then click Scan to Network Folder Setup in theSetup box.

Option two: Click the Settings tab, and then click Network Folder Setup under Scan - Digital Filing .

  5. Click Add Network Folder Entry , and then follow the on-screen instructions.

NOTE: Customize scan settings for each destination folder.

  6. After entering the required information about the network folder, click Save and Test to make sure the link to the network folder is working.  The new entry is added to the Network Folder list.

Thanks for responding to my original post. I have the printer hardwired to the router. It is a D Link DI-624. The IP address for the router is 192.168.0.1. If you can help with this issue that would be great. The network is PC as stated in the original post.
