Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

I set up word to print labels - Avery 5428 - they're small and come on a 4x6 sheet.  They look fine in Word, but when I try to print I've gotten various errors:

  • paper size mismatch
  • out of paper
  • paper jam

I've cleaned the rollers on the bottom of the printer and on the duplex attachment.  Most of the time I get the paper jam error and it's caught in the duplex attachment.

  • I've put in a stack about 3/4" high; it does not exceed the max paper line.
  • I've tried Word's 5428 template and also downloaded Avery's 5428 template.  They look a bit different but neither one works.
  • I've gone to the printer options on the print menu and changed the paper size from letter to 4x6 and tried changing the orientation.
  • In word, the labels show as 5 across and 4 down, but the labels show that they go in the other way, so I tried loading the labels the other way, but the paper guides won't go as small as 4".
  • I've checked the firmware and it is up-top-date.
  • The labels seem to bit a bit bowed, so when I load them the top label sheet is bowed up a bit but I can't get them to flatten out completely.

I've now wasted at least 25 sheets of labels as they get crunched or squished and can't be reused in the printer.

Please, someone help me.  This is ridiculous.  What is wrong with the printer and how do I fix it?  (BTW, it prints larger-sized paper just fine.)

Hi! @jaimeson, Welcome to HP forums!

I understand you have issue printing Avery labels from your printer.

Don't worry I'll try to help you out.

Did you make any changes to your printer?

Have you tried printing using a different brand Avery label?

Please try the steps recommended below.

Check the paper size setting to make sure it matches the paper you want to print.
   NOTE:
Some printers have an option to ignore the error and continue printing. If you choose to ignore the error, the margins on your printout might not be proportional to the edges of the paper.
In the program, you want to print from, click File, and then click Print.
Make sure your printer is in the Name or Printers drop-down list box, and then click Properties, Printer Properties or Preferences.
Click the Paper/Quality tab.
Click Advanced, if necessary, and then click Paper Size.
Select the paper size that matches the size and type of paper loaded in the printer tray, and then click OK. If there are no matching paper sizes, select the size from the list that is closest to the size of the paper loaded in the tray.
Click OK, and then try to print.
   NOTE:
If you are printing envelopes, you might need to change the mail settings of the program you are printing from in addition to adjusting print settings in the driver. For information on changing envelope settings in Microsoft Word, see How do I adjust the envelope settings in Microsoft Word? in the FAQ section of this document.

Refer this article to further troubleshoot paper mismatch errors.

I'll keep an eye out for your response.

I hope you have a great day! 🙂
