HP C4680
macOS 10.12 Sierra

Printer appears to be running autonomously to scan, copy, read memory card, etc. Will not stop. Impervious to touch commands. Have attempted to cancel ops, have removed and replaced in Mac several times, hard reset (power cord pull and replace), turned off, unplugged, etc., etc. Any ideas, please?

Let me take a moment to thank you for posting on the HP Support Forums.

I came across your post and would like to help. I read that you have an HP Photosmart C4680 All-in-One Printer and the printer autonomously tries to scan, copy, read memory card, etc. You have performed a hard reset and tried to remove and replace in Mac several times and the issue still persists. I appreciate the steps you have performed and have certainly done a good job.

I would like to know the following information to assist you better:

  • When was the last time the printer worked fine?
  • Did any updates take place on the printer after which it started to act like this?
  • Do you receive any messages on the printer screen or the computer?

Meanwhile. I recommend you to perform the following steps to isolate the issue and arrive at a fix:

  • Disconnect the power cable from the printer while the printer is still ON.
  • Disconnect any other cables if connected the printer.
  • Press and hold the printer’s power button for 15 seconds.
  • The printer should be directly connected to the wall outlet and not to a surge protector. Reconnect the power cable to print and the printer should power ON by itself. If the printer doesn’t power ON then please manually power it ON.

If the printer continues to autonomously perform the scan, copy actions then please perform a reset on the printer. I have sent you a private message with the steps to reset the printer.

I sincerely hope this fixes the issue. Keep me posted.Cheers! 🙂

In answer to your questions above:

- the last time it worked was about a year, ago, when it was in use on a PC system. At the time it was working fine. It was in storage a while. Now trying to operate on a MacBook Pro as indicated.

- updates: as to any updates, of course, on connecting it to the Mac OS Sierra seemed to detect it and indicated, at least, that it was loading driver from OS.

- did i receive any messages: are you serious? this thing just runs on its own. messages are continuous and persistent going off into scanning functions by itself, copying, printing from memory card, ....you name, i'm getting the messages...just none of them make any sense and definitely not responding to anything i'm doing.

PS Disconnected power as advised. Held power button down >15 seconds....sure, it started up, again, ....but same behaviors.

Thank you for replying and trying the suggested steps. 🙂

If the printer did not respond well to the reset steps then it indicates towards a hardware issue. I recommend you to contact HP phone support to explore the hardware service options for your printer.

I sincerely thank you for your patience and cooperation. Please let me know if you have any more questions. Cheers!
