HP Color Laser Jet 3600dn unresponsive in Snow Leopard

Hi!

I looked at the list of supported printers in 10.6 and the HP Color Laser Jet 3600 is supposed to be, but my dn model is now unresponsive. I can see the printer with my 10.6 machine, I can add the printer, I can reach the printer, but queue jobs take +/- 5 minutes to carry on. And by print job, I mean, something as innocent as a test page.

Printer works perfectly with my 10.4, 10.5 and Win XP computers.

I tried to delete/add the printer, restarted the printer, added it through LTP, through Bonjour, I reinstalled Snow Leopard with the full load of printer drivers, nothing works.

Help, pretty please.

Try this and use IP. 

  NOTE: Apple does not support AppleTalk in Mac OS X 10.6.

1. Choose File > Print .
2. From the Printer pop-up menu, choose your printer.
   Your printer may also be listed in the Nearby Printers submenu.
   A dialog appears, listing any Bonjour printers on your local network. It may take a minute or two for your printer to appear.
3. If your printer does not appear, choose Add Printer from the Printer pop-up menu. Printers that are turned on and connected to the local network (wireless and Ethernet) should appear as Bonjour devices.
4. Select your device from the list and click Add to create the HP printer queue for your HP Photosmart, Officejet, or Deskjet printer.
   Important : On larger networks, outside the Bonjour link-local network, your printer may not show up in the list. In this case, you can connect to your printer using its IP address. An IP printer is a network printer that uses TCP/IP protocol (such as HP Jetdirect, LPD/LPR, IPP) to communicate with your printer. You will need to know the printer IP address or DNS name (available from the printer’s front panel or Network Configuration Page).
5. In the toolbar, click IP .
6. From the Protocol pull-down menu, choose HP Jetdirect – Socket .
   This is the preferred protocol to connect to HP printers. For best performance please do not use IPP or LPD.
7. Enter your printer network information IP address or DNS name.
   The system should automatically select the appropriate HP print driver in the Print Using pull-down menu.
8. Click Add to create the HP printer queue for your HP Photosmart, Officejet, or Deskjet All-in-One printer.

Your computer can usually detect whether a printer has special accessories installed, such as additional paper trays or a duplex unit. If it cannot, a dialog appears that lets you specify them. To enable full functionality, make sure the settings in that dialog accurately reflect the installed options.

Already done. No change to my issue.

I resolved it by using an open source driver. Which means the issue was the driver, not the printing queue or the protocol.

I was just able to set up this same scenario using the 3600 driver included in the HP Print Driver Update 2.0 available through software update and printed from Safari with out any delay.

If you have a moment you could try going to the Print & Fax System Preference and <control> clicking or right clicking on the list of printers to the left.  Then select Reset Printing System....

Reboot the Mac OS

If software update does not prompt you for the 2.0 driver update when adding the 3600 you can manually download it from here:

Hello IronBadger... I tried your procedure to have the CLJ 3600 to work with Snow Leopard and it didn't worked. Pages print, but it takes more than 5 minutes to be processed by the printer. The driver version is 1.01.

My 3600dn is not working properly either after Snow Leopard installation. (10.6.1)  I initially noticed it missing from the network but was able to add it in again with the IP address.  Any file that goes into the print queue will print and then remain in the queue and pause the printer afterward.  I have to manually delete the item out of the queue after every print.  Otherwise, the queue jams and nothing will print.  If I forget, and later turn my computer on, the old print job will print itself again.

I have repeatedly tried the software update (just tried again now), but no updated print driver is presented.  Current version is 1.0.1.

I tried Iron Badger's suggestion and manually downloaded.  The installation does not work, however.  The progress bar gets down to about 95% where it says "about a minute" to go.  It says it is running package scripts, but it just stops there, and then I hear the fan coming on (Macbook pro, intel core duo, 4gb).  So I have to kill it and reboot.  Nice.  Plus the file size looks quite large - all I want is the 3600 driver, not every one in the HP database.

I am directly connecting to this HP CLJ 3600n via USB cable, my MacBook Pro 13 with Snow L. OS X 10.6.1 installed and latest HP driver set also downloaded.  I CANNOT get a single page printed.

This computer HAD PRINTED FINE in 10.5 (leopard)!  No other changes than 'upgrading' to 10.6 then 10/.6/1.

Cables work with other PCs; Printer works with WIndows XP PC. Worked before Snow Leopard upgrade.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled each time new drivers were posted by Apple (or downloaded in update 10.6.1)

I have multiple other printers installed because there are different printers at each of the 3 places I work:

THESE WORK with this Mac:

1) HP P1006 laser, with MOST current driver

2) Canon MP530, with MOST current driver

3) HP 4L with CUPS-Gutenprint 5.2.4 driver

I also have an OJ 4215 Printer that WILL print a test page from the Driver Utility, but will NOT print from any application.  Same deal: slow, methodical downloads and reboots, then again and again, checking all the wires and cables, etc.

VERRRY frustrated; seeking solution, please!

Please excuse my ignorance...but what is an "open source driver" and how do I get it?

I have the same problem as all the others:  3600n, worked fine in 10.5, will work via USB in 10.6 but not bonjour, updated everything per instructions, spent 4 hours with Apple and 2 with HP tech support doing all sorts of computer gymnastics.  Still doesn't work.  

Ridiculous.
