HP Deskjet 2542
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

So when I try to scan, it'll start normally - it'll whirr a bit and the bar will go back and forth - but when it would usually start scanning, it just.... stops. And when I cancel the scan to try again, it'll say that the scanner's busy (the power light'll still be blinking, so I know the scanner thinks it's busy as well)

I ran HP doctor - it failed at the Driver Check. But when I restarted and continued, it froze. So I un- and re-installed the entire thing, same problem. Installed on a different computer - running Windows XP - same problem.

I have it connected via USB, though I also tried using wireless when I thought the cord might be the problem (no dice, obviously). I've never used it to print, and I don't have ink or paper, so I'm afraid I can't test that side of things.

Any advice would be appreciated!

@GarnetVengeance,

Welcome to HP Forums, this is a great place to get support, find answers and tips.

Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you.

I understand that you are unable to scan to computer from your HP Deskjet 2542 All-in-One Printer.

This issue could occur the drivers are not installed properly or the scanner mechanism may be damaged.

Let's go through a few steps to resolve this issue.

You need to Click Here to make a copy from the printer to check if it a scanner issue or a driver issue.

If the copy is fine, then you need to follow the steps in the links below:

1. USB Scanner Connection Error (Windows)

2. Network Scanner Connection Error (Windows)

If the cartridges are empty, then you need to replace them first.

Let me know how this works.

You have a good day ahead.

I don't think it's the scanner mechanism - like I said, it goes back and forth just fine (even the light on the bar'll be on) until it reaches the point where it actually 'scans'. Doesn't even make noises of protest, just freezes. Still, I suppose something could be wrong that isn't obvious to the naked eye....?

I'd already tried the support guides, but they don't help.

Thanks you for your assistance.

Thank you for your reply, I'll be more than glad to help you.

I understand that the issue has not resolved after following the steps mentioned in the previous interaction.

This could be a hardware issue with the unit.

Hence, please contact HP Phone Support for further assistance at the link: www.hp.com/contacthp
