Out of all the HP printers I have owned, this one is the worst. I've had it for just over a year now and I have had difficulty printing since the beginning. Many times I'll go to print only to find the printer is offline, even though it is turned out and ready to go. Also, I cannot tell you how many times the connection between the printer and the wifi goes out. The scanner works most of the time, however, I have had problems with my computer establishing a connection with the printer. I currently am unable to print as I constantly receive messages that the printer is in an error state.
I have searched the Internet and read previous discussion posts from people who have the same problem. I restarted the printer (turned it off and unplugged it, then plugged it back in and turned it on) and even reset it to factory settings. Nothing is working! Even though this printer was a Black Friday deal, I wish I hadn't wasted the money. I just wanted the convenience of a wireless printer. I have never had this many problems with a HP printer before.

Hello, @cab091 – Hope you are well 🙂
Thank you for becoming an HP Forum member. It is a great location to get help from the community, get suggestions and find what has worked for others.
I see that you are having issues while using the Envy 4500 printer. But to assist you better, I need to know the operating system on your computer. Please let me know the same.
Alternatively, try the steps mentioned below:
- First, update the printer firmware. If unsure, go to http://hp.care/2c8eOcF and click on “Firmware” to download and update the printer firmware.
- Restart the printer and assign a static IP address to stabilize the wireless connection:
- Obtain the IP address of the printer – You can touch the “wireless” icon on the printer control panel to obtain the IP address.
- Type the IP address on your web browser to obtain the printer EWS page on your computer.
- Go to "Network" tab - General - Select "Network protocols" - Select "Enable IPv4 only" (or similar) - Apply the settings.
- Go to the “Network” tab – Click on “Wireless (802.11) – Then click on “Network address (IPv4)
- Click on the radio button which says “Manual IP” and then click “Suggest a manual IP address” to give a manual IP address to your printer.
- Click on radio button which says “Manual DNS Server” and under manual preferred type 8.8.8.8 and under manual alternate type 8.8.4.4 (This is Google DNS server address)
Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance.
Cheers 🙂
