I have purchased and installed a hp black ink cartridge for my hp envy 4502 printer. I previously was signed up for the wireless instant hp ink service. I canceled it because it was costing me too much money. I looked online to find out if I could just print with the black cartridge and on a website to purchase the ink it said several times by several different people that I could just print in black. I went into my preferences and changed it to black ink only. I can't print anything from my laptop computer. I used the HP Print Doctor and it says error no color cartridge installed. I can print a test page from the printer control panel or make a copy from the actual printer itself, but I cannot print from my laptop at all. Do I have to purchase a color cartridge?

I understand that you would like to print only with the black cartridge. I will certainly do my best to help you with this 🙂

 

Your HP Envy 4502 printer is capable of printing in single-cartridge mode. The single-cartridge mode is initiated when an ink cartridge is removed from the ink cartridge carriage. (In your case, remove the color cartridge from the printer) When the HP ENVY 4500 series operates in single-cartridge mode, a message is displayed on the printer display. Simply acknowledge the message to continue printing.


If you are still unable to print from the PC, then the issue could be with the printer connectivity / drivers. You can try reinstalling the drivers to make sure everything is in order. Follow the steps below:

 

  • Unplug the USB cable from the printer and computer if present.
  • Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP Envy printer entries and uninstall them.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Now click on http://hp.care/2c2YltD to download and install the printer drivers.
  • Connect the USB cable if prompted and follow the onscreen instructions to complete the installation.

No I already tried uninstalling printer and reinstalling. I already removed cord from printer and did several restarts. Single cartridge mode does not work. I purchased a color cartridge. Problem fixed.
