HP Envy 7640
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

Each time I order a print job, I get a message asking me to align printer;  however, after choosing "do not align", it prints fine.  Each time I've tried to align the printer, I get a message that it failed.

What to do???

Hi @floreneb,

Thanks for posting in the HP Forums, and welcome!

I'd like to help you with the alignment issues you are having on your HP ENVY 7640 e-All-in-One printer.

Generally, if your alignment has failed, the printer will continue to prompt you to align the cartridges until it has been completed successfully. This is to ensure you are getting the best quality printouts that the printer is capable of. That being said, it can be really frustrating if you can't complete the alignment successfully to get rid of the constant prompts.

There are many factors that can cause the alignment to fail.

  • Is the printer plugged directly into a wall outlet? (The printer has a power moderator built in, so if it is plugged into a power surge bar or battery backup, it may be getting inconsistent power which could be triggering the failure.)
  • Are you using genuine HP cartridge? Are any of the cartridges low?
  • Is the printer on a level, stable surface? If the table or surface that the printer is sitting on tends to move or waver whilst the printer is printing, this can trigger the failure as well.
  • Are you using plain, letter sized paper in the machine? Have you tried removing and reloading the paper to make sure it's installed correctly?

If none of these are causing the failure, the first thing I would suggest, would be to remove and re-install the ink cartridges in the unit and then retry the alignment directly from the front panel.

  1. Load U.S. Letter or A4 size, unused, plain white paper into the input tray.
  2. On the printer control panel, swipe the display to the left, and then touch Setup (). The Setup menu displays.
  3. Swipe the display down, and then touch Printer Maintenance.
  4. Touch Align Printer.
  5. After the printer prints the alignment page, touch OK, and then recycle or discard the alignment page.

Please respond to let me know if these steps helped resolve you issue!

I am also getting a message to align the printer but it's because I've replaced an ink cartridge. It does it each time I do. I have no desire to align it as it is fine and doing the alignment without cause is just wasteful. I only want the message to go away. How do I make that happen?

Sadly HP knows this just eats up more and more ink so you buy more cartridges.  Sure!  Just keep running alignment!!  HP - I used to love you...but anymore the quality of these printers just continues to go downhill.  Mine is brand new and doing same thing.
