Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

When print job is initiated the carriage moves to the right. Once there it looks like the gear just to the left of the color cartridge grinds. Once the grinding stops the print job continues & the resulting print quality is unaffected.

The noise is very annoying & I am concerned this might affect the life of the machine.

Warranty has expired so wonder if there is something I can do to address the problem. I do see a paper jam, but something is obviously bound up.

Allow me to welcome to HP Support Forums! It is a great platform to get help from the community, get suggestions and find what has worked for others!

 

Going through your post, I understand that you are getting grinding while trying to print on your HP Deskjet printer. It most likely is caused due to paper jam or issues with the paper pick rollers. We will certainly help you fix this issue 🙂



Go to http://hp.care/2lbJDil and perform the “Solutions 1” to “Solution 3” to get this issue fixed. Make sure you clean the rollers thoroughly after removing the paper jam.  If the issue persists, then try performing a hard reset on the printer:

  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Remove USB cable, if present.
  • Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.
  • Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord (This is important) and then plug back the power cord to the printer.
  • Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle.

Hard reset procedure did not resolve problem.

 

-I do not find any paper jams from either the front or rear. Do not believe this is a paper jam or cleaning issue.

-The grinding occurs when the carriage is fully to the right. This might be some kind of head cleaning step in the printing process?

-The grinding occurs on power up & at the beginnig of each print job. If the print job is multiple pages the grinding is only at the first page.

-From what I can tell the grinding is related to the small gear to the bottom left corner of the color cartridge when the carriage is fully to the right. Is there a way to check the gear that meshes with the gear I can see to make sure it is free?

Problem is moot now.

 

Printer has now stopped working. HP F4400

 

Time to go printer shopping.
