For some reason, I now find that I cannot scan from my HP Office J6410.  When I startup my PC, I get the message "The HP imaging device was not found." with 5 options to try.  The extended error information is shown as "8, [(1, 0, -2147221496)]", which I'm guessing means something to someone.

I've tried each of the five options given, but still I get the error.  I've ran the Scan Diagnostic Utility, only to find that the process fails at the "Windows (WIA) Scan" check.  The error text I get is:

"The HP Scan Diagnostic Utility is unable to scan using the Windows Imaging service. Save your work, and then close all applications. Turn the product off, turn it on again, and then click Restart Computer. If the issue persists, you will not be able to scan using applications that use this service, such as Microsoft Paint. HP scanning software applications might still work. If you want to scan with WIA, remove the Driver by clicking Uninstall Software. Reinstall the software with the product CD or by downloading the most current Full Feature software from the HP Web site (Recommended)."

I've tried all this, but still I get the original error message.  I've never had this before but it has only recently appeared.  Anyone know what's wrong and how to fix it?

TIA

Duncs

That's what I ended up doing. Connecting the USB cable to get it setup, then leaving it for a week or so. I then tried setting it up as wireless and removed the USB cable. Everything worked fine. So, It looks like you need the USB connected so that you can fully set the printer up. Glad you got it working. Duncs

OK. I've tried everything that is listed on these boards. I've uninstalled & reinstalled the software, as well as the software.  I've changed registry settings.  I've completely removed teh software using HPs own stripper and then reinstalled form scratch.  Still nothing.

I downloaded the Scan Diagnostics Utility v3.5, and as well as telling me that it cannot scan using the Windows Imaging Service, I now get the following when it checks the HP Twain Scan:

"The Twain component is not functioning correctly because the product is being used by another process. Save your work, and then close all applications. Turn the product off, turn it on again, and then click Restart Computer and Retest. If the issue persists, you should uninstall, and then reinstall the product software. Remove the software by clicking Uninstall Software. Reinstall the software with the product CD or by downloading the most current Full Feature software from the HP Web site (Recommended)."

Once again, I've uninstalled everything.  I've switched things off, disconnected power cords, switched them back on, restarted my PC, reinstalled teh software...still I get the same error.

Nothing I've seen works, unless there's something that I haven't seen, and it now makes me want to go and buy another, more reliable and compatible printer.  Is this a software / driver / user issue?  If software / driver, what are HP doing about it?  I've installed it onto a Windows 7 PC and it was working perfectly up until the last update, which was a fix for problem of losing scanned images, or something.

Coincidence?

We just bought an HP Scanjet G4050 in Dec. 2010.  I, too, had the same error message "HP imaging device was not found".  I tried re-installing about five times.  I did get my problem solved yesterday after a 2-hour "chat" with HP.  It seems this a "software conflict" with other software on my computer.  (I have a PC with a 64-bit processor and I run Windows 7.)  As it turns out in my case, we used to have an HP Photosmart Officejet printer/scanner, but it died on us last summer.  We bought a new Epson workforce printer/scanner.  Then we invested in the G4050 as I have some heavy-duty scanning of slides and film to do.  I "failed" to uninstall our old HP printer/scanner and that seemed to be the crux of the matter.  The HP engineer helped me remove all reference to HP products on my computer and we deleted the HP registry keys. (regedit).  I reinstalled the new scanner and it worked like a charm.  I think it doesn't matter which exact HP device you are trying to install, just be aware that there might be conflicts with other HP devices.  I also just read a complaint from a user who had finally figured out that his "Logitech web cam" cannot be used with his HP scanner installed - it causes a "device conflict".  So it might be conflicts with non-HP devices.

My only concern is, the device used to work and noting new has been installed on the PC since.  I didn't have a previous printer so there should be no drivers / programs hanging about.  Short of doing a complete re-install of Windows 7, I can't think of anything else to do...and I'm not sure that would help anyway!

HP I gave up on HP.  I see allot of other posts with the same issue and no resolution.  I finally took the risk of editing my registry.  I surgically removed everything to do with HP.  It took about an hour.  Fortunately there were no errors restarting windows.  This was successful at eliminating the error and restoring the scanning option.  Good luck.

Did you just search your registry for HP and remove all entries, or did you manually go through everything?

I have an hp scanjet 5590 and just experienced the problem today when trying to adjust settings via the HP Solution Center software. I also tried all of the suggested solutions but continue to get the error. I am running Windows 7 64-bit and do have a built-in camera on my Dell XPS15 laptop.

Mostly I just use the scan buttons on the 5590 (scan to file, scan to print, etc.) and these have been working just fine and continue to work just fine. I also find that I can get to the default settings that I need through this path also. However, no HP Solution Center (software) functions work (I just tried them). I am guessing that I did not notice this problem on my new OS/laptop because I hadn't yet tried using the software until today.

So, bottom line, I seem to be getting what I need via the hardware controls and the software that it loads but can get no satisfaction from the HP Solution Center software. By the way, I downloaded and installed the latest HP Scanjet 5590 Full Feature Software and Driver directly from HP when I set up my new computer.

Hello Duncs, this week I have the same error as yours, "5 options turn off, turn on, reinstall... error 8..."

My HP6488 usually worked fine and occasionally couldn't find the image device. But this week I got the same error message as you. I can print but can't scan as the scan device can't be found, and the Solution Centre displays that the HP printer is connected.

I un-installed the HP driver and re-install the driver, nothing changed and it won't help.

I am using Windows XP SP3, then I right click the "my computer", select "properties", select "hardware" tab's "Device manager", select "Imaging devices", it shows there are two HP Officejet J6400. Then I delete the #2,

But I found the #1 is disabled, then I enable it inside the "device manager" by right click that image device's icon the select properties then select enable in the new window. After 15 seconds it disabled itself again. So I watch the HP Officejet 6400 properties window, each time I enable the printer/scanner, it works but only working for 15 seconds, then it disables itself. I don't know what causes this. But I guess it maybe the router/ethernet not stable.

I then unplug the printer/scanner's ethernet cable and USB cable, then plug them all in again. the bottom right side of the computer screen shows detected new hardware, then after one minute the new hardware is ready to use. I then found in the "device manager" I got two imaging devices again "HP 6400 and HP 6400 #2", and I notice HP6400 #2 is enabled and working while the #1 is disabled.

So I guess it's the USB cable that helps and it's more stable then wireless/ethernet connection.

Now I am scanning. Hope this would help you. Because I fiddled the above things without full knowledge, I am not sure if the error would come back.
