Hi Honor student...I followed your directions and still get an error.  Any suggestions?  I really want to use my HP Laserjet 4 plus.  It said it installed but....Error.  What could be wrong?  I am using a USP/Parallel adapter cable.

FINALLY!!!!  thanks for the tip on where to find the virtual usb!  It's 2:27am and I refused to go to sleep until I connected this awesome printer!  I just hope I don't have nightmares with the word ERROR flashing all night!!! LOL Thanks again

Resolved doing the following

-sysyem properties

-Device Manager

-Ports

-ECP Printer port (LPT1)  Right click and uninstall

-Top Tab click on Action

-Click on Scan for Hardware Changes

Hopefully this resolves your problem with Windows 10 and HP Laserjet 4

When I get to 'Choose a printer port' I select the radial  button 'use an existing port' and in the drop down box I do not see 'VIRTUAL USB'

What do I do now??

HP Recommended

I solved it.

Open Device Manager

Open Ports

Double click LPT1

Open second tab

Check "Enable Legacy Plug and Play"

Close Dialog.

Thank you.  That worked great.

New computers do not support the old parallel interface. You can buy a USB adapter either on line or at an electronics store such as best buy.

I used a usb adapter that I used with win 7 and it worked.

rfk15n did me a great service with his suggestion for Windows 10 and HP4  USB setup.

Windows 10 would not recognize my HP4, I was very frustated looking for solutions.

This worked very well!

Follow these instructions of his:

Re: HP LASERJET 4 PLUS ON WINDOWS 10

I have just converted from Win 7 to Win 10. I have a Laser Jet 4 and used a USB/Parallel adapter cable.

Have printer on, and hooked upto the USB port on your computer.

Goto Printers & Devices, and select install printer.

The computer, in my case, did not detect the printer.

I selected, my device is not listed.

I then selected manually install printer.

When you do this it will give you several options. Use, virtual usb port.

Click next, and the computer will install the printer using the resident drivers left over from your previous windows iteration, mine was windows 7.

Click finish and print a test page.

You should be good to go

I used the virtual port option and it still won't print.  What now?
