Hi michelag,
This is certainly a peculiar issue that you are having on just the one computer.
Make sure the Manual Duplexing option is enabled from the print driver:
- Click the Windows icon (
), and then click Devices and Printers.
- Right-click the HP product, and then click Printer Properties.
- Click the Device Settings tab.
- Set the Allow Manual Duplex to Enabled and click OK to save the change. (click the + to extend the list)
Now try printing and check for any change.
Thank You.

ok, this time something peculiar happened:
I sent 2 pages in word, they were in the queue, but the printer didn't start.
I restarted the computer, leaving the document in the queue.
As I powered on the printer again, it printed perfectly with the manual 2-sided print.
Then I sent immediately 2 pdf pages, and the problem reappeared.
Then I tried with the same 2 .doc pages, and the problem was still there...
this is kind of weird.
it is like the printer "resets" itself....
i'm losing my hope...
thank you anyway Gemini02

Hi michelag ,
I have provided a few more things that we can try, I would really like to get this two-sided printing working properly for you again. I will continue to provide different tactics to hopefully resolve this issue, if you are game. It is very odd that you managed to get it to work once. But not until after the job was stuck in the queue and then restarting the computer, it printed the two-sided document. There might be a issue going on with the Print Spooler on the computer.
Did you have to enable the Manual Duplex in Device Settings?
Clean out the Temp folder on the computer. How To Manually Clean Out The Temp Folder In Windows 7.
Clear the Printer Spooler Files and Enable the Spooler Service.
1. Press the Windows key and R at the same time, to show the run command line.
2. Type "Services.msc" (without the quotation marks).
3. Double-click "Printer Spooler" in the Services list.
4. Click Stop and click OK.
5. Press the Windows key and R at the same time, then type "%WINDIR%\system32\spool\printers", right click on any documents and left click to delete them.
6. Then Press the Windows key and R at the same time, type "Services.msc" .(without the quotation marks).
7. Double-click "Printer Spooler" in the Services list.
8. Click on Start. In the Startup Type list, make sure that "Automatic" is selected and click OK.
Try printing a two-sided document from Notepad. Just copy and paste a couple of documents in the application and try printing again.
Let me know the results.
Thank You.

premise: the manual duplex in device settings was and is enabled.
I followed your procedure, there were no documents in the spooler.
I restarted the serviced, sent a 2 pages documente from notepad, it appears as usual the window of manual 2sided printing, but it prints the 2 pages straight without stopping and asking me to press continue.
sorry, it did not work...
any other hints?
thank you as usual.

Hi michelag ,
Thanks for holding in there. I thought of a couple more things we could try.
Uninstall and reinstall the printer software under a new User Profile with Admin Rights, in case the profile is corrupted.
You could try and install the Laserjet P1606dn driver to see if that will allow you to print two-sided. It may or may not work.
Let me know the outcome.
Thank You.

ok
I created a new admin account;
uninstalled the printer through "remove device" under "devices and printers" (sorry my win7 is not in english so perhaps names are different)
downloaded and reinstalled the printer drivers, sent a 2-pages pdf, and in didn't work properly.
then i donloaded Laserjet P1606dn driver, but while trying installing I receive an error message telling me to plug in the printer. It recognizes it is the wrong printer 🙂
Ok now just tried with a word file, the same as before.
not working.
however, no pain no harm.
thank you for this effort.
what the heaven can it be then ?
incredible that it was working fine until mid December....

Hi @michelag ,
I see that you are also having issues printing two-sided manually. I would like to help you out today.
I would suggest to restore your computer back to a earlier time when everything was working properly, if the previous steps on the other posts didn't resolve the two-sided printing.
What operating system are you using? How to Find the Windows Edition and Version on Your Computer.
If you need further assistance, just let me know.
Have a nice weekend!
Thank You.

Hi
unfortunately I took an adware or spyware and had to perform huge activities on the system at end december.
this is the point from which it is not working anymore.
I don't have restore points of that time anymore. The first is of afortnight ago, when things didn't work.
So restore point is not a viable option.
I'm using win 7 home 64 bit.
Nice WE to you too, Gemini

Hi michelag,
I spoke with a colleague of mine and she suggested to update the driver to a Laserjet P1102w driver since it is also host based to see if it will allow you to print two-sided.
I will provide the information below on how to do this. If it doesn't work you can flip back to your original driver for the Laserjet 1018.
Clear Temp Folder:
- Open your Start menu and in the 'search programs and files' box type %temp% and hit enter.
- When the Temp folder opens select Ctrl + A at the same time on your keyboard.
- Once everything is highlighted in the Temp folder select 'Delete' on your keyboard to delete the files within the Temp folder. No files and folders on your actual computer will be removed. This will only delete Temporary files. If a file is still be used by a program on your keyboard you will get the pop up to 'skip' the item.
- Once the Temp files are deleted close the window.
- On your Desktop, right click on the Recycling Bin and select Empty Recycling Bin.
Download the Laserjet P1102w driver.
HP LaserJet Hostbased Basic Driver Update.
- Allow the driver to download and run it.
- Once the extraction has completed the installer may launch, please close the installation window.
- Go to your Start menu and in the 'search programs and files' box type %temp% and hit enter.
- Once the Temp folder opens, click on the most recent 7z folder. It should include files in it that say LJP1102w.
- At the top of this folder you will see the file path. It may show something like 'computer - local disk c - users- appdata - local - Temp - 7z. . . .'
- Left click on the right hand side of the file path bar at the top and everything should highlight in that bar. Then right click in the bar and copy the highlighted file path.
- Close the Temp folder
- Click on your Start menu and then select Devices and Printers
- In the Devices and Printers folder right click on your Laserjet 1018 and left click on Printer Properties
- Left click on the Advanced tab
- Left click on New Driver
- When the New Driver window opens just hit 'next' until you see a list of Manufacturers on the left and a list of Printers on the right.
- Click on the 'Have Disk' button on the bottom right
- When the 'browse' window opens, simply right click in the file path bar and select 'paste' to paste in the file path we previously copied. Select OK.
- When prompted choose the Laserjet P1102w and select Next until the Add Driver windows close.
- Under the Printer Properties window select 'Apply' but don't hit OK
- Select the General tab
- Rename your printer back to Laserjet 1018.
- Hit OK.
Try printing two-sided again.
If you are still having issues, you can revert back to the Laserjet 1018 driver by doing the following steps 8-12.
If you still can't print two-sided then here are a couple of things you can try on the computer to see if it will help, but I still think it had something to do with a Windows Update. If you are using the Windows driver, any updates can cause the driver to update and possibly loose different feature. But since you are still having the issue with the HP drivers, I would run the SFC and the Microsoft Fix It Tool.
Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files.
