The printer is configured on an enterprise network with a static IP address. It seems that after it goes to sleep, and this happens at least once a day, it will not wake up to print again. The printer has to be physcially turned off and back to function.
I've not seen the issue with other printers of the same make/model elsewhere on our network, so I'm a bit perplexed as to why this is happening on this particular one.
Would be grateful for any input.

I had the same problem with our M425dn printers.
When flashed with the latest firmware the problem is gone.
Make sure you have the lastest firmware on your M401n printers.

We didn't have this problem until we applied this newest firmware update. Now it won't wake from sleep at least once a day. It is extremely frustrating because you cannot disable the sleep. The LED on the front-bottom of the printer blinks now too. I don't remember the light on the front blinking when the machine is in standby mode before the firmware update.

New firmware out 20150212(25 Feb 2015). We applied on multiple printers and haven't had the issue since.
Fixes related to sleep mode:
- This release addresses multiple issues which may cause the device to not wake from sleep mode.
- Addresses an issue where the device may not wake up from sleep mode when receiving a fax if it is connected to an improperly grounded 220v power source.
- Fixes an issue that may cause the device to fail to wake from sleep mode when receiving a print job over the network.
- Fixes an issue where the printer may fail to wake from sleep mode when connected to an 802.1x wireless network.
- Fixes an issue where the printer may stop responding to incoming network traffic for up to 10 seconds while coming out of sleep mode.
- Addresses an issue where the outer buttons (home, back and the left and right arrows) on the touch screen control panel may become unresponsive when the product comes out of sleep mode.
- Addresses an issue where the printer may fail to enter sleep mode.

this is happening at my job also, we have hundreds of these printers and once they go to stand by mode they will not wake, unless we physically touch the power or ok button. this is for a criticial care hospital and is causing major problems. does anyone know of a fix for this.

I have had the same problem for years now with multiple M425DN printers. See this thread:
If HP would just give us back the option to disable sleep mode completely, then we could keep these things from falling asleep and not waking back up. It would solve the problem. HP - Please bring back the option to disable sleep mode -- at least until you can fix the firmware where they don't lock up.
I understand you're trying to conserve energy (and force your users to do so as well), but the savings in this case don’t outweigh the disastrous outcome of, for example, a fax not coming in because the printer would not wake up. You're forcing me to look at other manufacturers like Canon and Brother.
I would prefer to continue using HP products but this is completely unacceptable.
I really can’t believe this isn't more of an issue. I can’t believe that HP refuses to give us the option to turn off sleep mode on these printers. Earlier versions of the firmware allowed sleep to be disabled. Why did HP take that option away? Why can't they give it back? It's really embarassing to tell my users that the only way to fix it is to replace the printer.
Come on, HP. What gives?
