I've been using this printer for a few years and over the last week it started having a problem where it stopped printing and HP ToolboxFX said it could not connect to the printer. I restarted the printer and now on startup all three lights (ready, attention, and low toner) come on immediately and the LCD screen remains blank showing no error. The printer is unresponsive to any buttons.
The previous toner cartridge was low (but still printing fine), so I've tried replacing the cartridge. However, this has made no difference.
Please help! Thanks.

Hi,
As I Understand The HP LaserJet 1536 printer is not responding and the Display is Blank.
Kindly follow these troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue.
1. Disconnect USB/Network/FAX and power on Standalone unit.
2. Try different power source.
3. Make sure the unit is directly connectedd to the wall outlet.
4.Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product and check the for any physical damage. If the power cord is damaged, replace it
5. Make sure the product is not exposed to an electric or magnetic field.
6. Perform a NVRAM reset on the unit.
a. Turn the printer off
b. Press and hold down CANCEL and > (right arrow button) at the same time while powering on printer.
c. Continue to hold down buttons until the control panel display reads PERMANENT STORAGE INIT.
d.Release the buttons. Printer will return to Ready automatically.
If you have completed all the preceding steps and are still experiencing a problem, service the product.

Thanks so much for the quick reply!
I've followed the steps you've outlined. For the NVRAM reset, but how long is that supposed to take? I powered on holding the keys and the LCD now says 'Hewlett-Packard' and none of the three lights (ready, attention, toner) have turned on...However, it hasn't gone to 'Permanent Storage Init' even after 5 minutes of holding the keys.

Hi,
As I understand the printer is stuck on Permenent Initialization. not to worry the printer is trying to restore the defaults, if it takes a long time,
1. Try to disconnect the power cord and replug it again from the back of the printer.
2. Make sure the printer is connected directly to the wall outlet.
3. Try a different wall outlet.
4. try a NVRAM initialization again.

Thank you! This immediately solved my problem. Turns out I switched the power cord from a second monitor to the printer. I was getting all three lights on all the time and no words or directions were showing up and the printer would not do anything. I actually had the printer in the car to take to the dump when I thought I would try to figure it out one more time. In reading the post I tried a different power cord and it works like a champ. Thank you very much!!!
