Hello,

The flash memory probably is corrupted since the power went off while it was rewriting the memory. Please see these instructions on reupdating the unit.

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&taskId=130&prodSeriesId=...

They should tell you to go here

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/ProductList.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=18972&prod..., select your printer, operating system and then select the link that says "firmware". THen download and install the file. You may need to have the printer connected to the computer over USB.

I got the same problem.

And I cant figure out how to solve it.. flash went bad due to bad motherboard. Motherboard should be fixed, but since its stuck at Hewlett-Packard >> >>. I cant get it to "ready" and therefor I cant flash it. It just gets stuck after sending it, and the printer doesnt respond to it.

Is there a way to empty or backtrack firmware, or is it possible to order a new one to swap myself?

Do you ever see anything on the printer's UI screen when sending the file like "downloading, flashing" or is it just always blank when sending the file?

Additionally, does the computer ever show it has something connected to it over the USB cable?

How do you know the motherboard is now fixed?

Keep in mind, I work in firmware update for deskjets, not laserjets, so I can only be so helpful with these products.

I got the happy face. Went over to the printer 10-15 mins later to reboot it, it said programming. Left it like that for a good 2h before giving up and rebooted when i was sure it was stuck.

Computer doesnt confirm the printer no, since its in startup mode (my own guess).

I turned it on after baking, and tried rebooting it about 10-15 times since. Never once did the display not light up (like before, when 8/10 didnt work)

To be honest, i am ofcourse not 100% sure.

Im happy for your response, even if you are master at deskjets 🙂

yaSo unfortunately, I've read of lots of problems with this printer freezing and they seemed to be linked to the formatter board. If your device is still under warranty, it seemed like most people were getting their device replaced by HP. I'm going to wager though that your device is not under warranty.

However, if that isn't the problem, you can try to do a reset on the device. Please follow the direction in the post about 5 posts down in this thread and with the time stamp 09-16-2008 10:29 AM

http://h30499.www3.hp.com/t5/Multifunction-and-All-in-One/Lost-Password-for-HP-LaserJet-M1522nf/td-p...

If the printer doesn't work after the reset, have it plugged into the computer with a USB cable and try to send the firmware update file to the printer. It might have more luck after the reset above.

If the printer doesn't show up as a device connected when plugged into the computer, you can try this

1) TURN PRINTER'S POWER OFF
(USB should stay connected)
2) Delete installed driver (if exists)
3) Manually install driver for your printer
(When choosing port, use one of "Virtual Printer Ports for USB" which is your printer connected to)
4) Run firmware update program from HP Support web page
(PRINTER IS OFF)
5) In firmware update program's window choose your printer (manually installed) and press "Send Firmware" button
6) Wait for firmware to be completely sent to your printer's task window
7) TURN YOUR PRINTER ON
😎 The printer might take the download and show "Downloading...", "Erasing..." and "Programming..."

(Steps borrowed from http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/forums/laser/63535)

If the above doesn't work, reset the printer and try to send the file again.( Since the printer may be aware the previous update attempt failed, it may be in a state to try to update again.)

Lastily, some people seem to recommend baking the formatter board, so if you have nothing to lose you might try this, although I'm not sure if your symptoms match the symptoms of the people with the baked board since you printer got stuck on "programming" when trying to install an update.

I've never tried this, but if you have nothing to lose, it might be worth a shot. And yes, I know it's extra work for you when HP released this unreliable product. But I'd only use the baking method above as a last resort and when you know you no longer care about the printer or trying to get it fixed by a service place (although it's probably cheaper to buy a new printer than to have it serviced).

I tried the firmware trick, no luck. Probably tried it a dussin times. Seems to be for when it says firmware corrupt, mine just stuck. Tried baking twice. No change. Just Hp and two (four) arrows.

The cancel + arrow down doesnt do anything.

All this started by that failed firmware, atleast it started before 😞 even if it took time.

I just hate too throw stuff that actually works. My gutt tells me if i just could change the bios chip or wipe it to some kind off factory setting, it would be fine. Do you know if its exchangable, or soldered? I know this is way out of normal customer self service, but aslong as it isnt soldered, im sure its no big deal for me to swap it.

I applaud you for trying to bake it.

Oh, for the cancel and down arrow, I don't know if the steps made it clear, but it's unplug the unit, hold those 2 buttons down, and then plug in the unit while holding those two buttons down still and continue to hold them for like 5 seconds or something. I'm not sure how clear the instructions were.

I don't think you'd be able to get just a memory chip, or if you did, you'd have to resolder it. You could buy a whole new board, which a google search shows to be about $125. But that's a 3rd party seller. I'll see what I can find for HP parts tomorrow. But I'd hate for you to spend like $150 on a board and have it not fix the problem. Also, I don't know if they're selling just the board, or the board with our firmware loaded onto it.

I don't know if that model has a CMOS battery, but you could try removing it and putting it back in as well. It should look like a watch battery and be located on the mother board. BUt I don't know about that model of printers specifically.

The problem with the factory setting wiping is the printer doesn't seem to boot up, so you can't get it to a state where you can wipe it. Give me sometime to track down a laserjet person who might know more than I do. It may take 3 working days or so.
