I have used this printer for many years with no issues, I have a MacBook. A friend was visiting and tried to print from their PC. I'm not sure exactly what they did because I wasn't home, but they said they downloaded a driver, I think they may have downloaded firmware too. They were unable to find a way to print.
When I tried to print from my computer later that day, my printer dialogue box said the printer was offline. There was an error message on the printer control panel display that said "84 Err 1916". I tried unpluging and turning off the printer, and rebooting my computer, but still had the message that the printer was offline when I tried to print. The same error keeps displaying on the printer control panel. I have tried using two different printer cords. I also uninstalled all the printers on my computer by going to Systems Preferences --> Printers and Scanners. I haven't been able to reinstall the printer as it does not show up when I go to Systems Preference --> Printers and Scanners --> +.
Neither of the two control planel lights that indicate the printer is ready to print or that there is an error are illuminated.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Poster above please give accurate information. For Gods sake you work for HP and should know that all printer support is provided by HP and not HPE. That said I am not familiar with your issue but will do some research to see if I can find some help for you. OK it appears your formatter was damaged by an incomplete firmware update. I think your friend screwed you by not knowing what he was doing. Best suggestion I can give you is to replace the formatter with one from Ebay since they are not that expensive. You can find instructions on the net since only one side cover needs to be removed. Very, very easy.

Thanks you davidzuts! It took me a few weeks to order the part, but now my printer is working great! I found a YouTube video with installation instructions for the formatter and now the printer is printing again. For other people using this forum to solve your own issues, remember to unplug the printer during installation. Then plug in and turn on the printer and wait until you printer display reads "Ready". Then you can connect your printer to your computer with a USB printing cable. I was able to print from my MacBook Air right away, no need for me to add the printer or download a driver.
I'm glad the printer won't be going to a landfill, and I saved money by not needing to buy a new printer! The formatter was less than $20 on eBay.
