Sorry that you are having this issue. This seems to be a hardware issue with the printer.
You can try to perform a hard reset on the printer. Unplug the power cord from the back of the printer. Leave it out for 30 seconds and plug it back in. Does ANY button work on the printer?
Please mark a reply "ACCEPTED AS SOLUTION" if it solved your problem, so others can find it.

I took the front panel off and did some basic continuity tests on the switch poles and the solder joints and everything appears in good shape. I suspect a problem with the logic board.
What is my recourse for getting this fixed?

Hi davjohns
I understand you would like to know how to get the printer fixed since the start copy button isn't working.
I would do a power reset to see if that will resolve the issue. With the printer still turned on, disconnect the power cable from the back of the printer, if the printer has external power module with a detachable power cord disconnect it for 15 seconds and then reconnect it. Then disconnect the power cable from the wall outlet. Wait 10 seconds and reconnect the power cable back to the wall outlet first, then the back of the printer and power it on again.
Make sure the printer is connected directly to wall outlet. (don't use a power hub or a surge protector)
I would update the firmware on the printer. Click Here. Select your operating system, click next, click the link for firmware.
I will send you a private message with some information to take a look at.
In the forum beside your handle name just click on the envelope to view it.
You can call HP Tech Support for further assistance to see what other options
are available for you.
