M177 Colorlaser Printer/Scanner
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I - finally - managed to get the scanner working. 

I uninstalled the printer SW and installed it again. It is the latest complete package rev. 16260 - I think it is from March 2021.

When the installations program prompted for automatic search or IP or physical address, I entered the IP address manually. That seems to make a difference. I had entered a fixed IP address, 192.168.1.101 into the printer prior to the installation.

The application named HP Scan and Capture = the one with the butterfly icon now works well. 

The application named HP Smart does still NOT find the scanner.
