Printer worked great with old laptop (crashed) and still prints from Samsung S4 phone using HP Print Service plugin.

HP OfficeJet 6000 E609n  (HP475973)

I have tried downloading the full software + driver several times from HP.

I worked with a tech support person who spent over an hour with me trying to get things to work, with no success.

Each time I try to load the software it seems to get all installed, but then after another minute I get the message that the driver did not install.

I have gone through all the steps in the HP Print & Scan Doctor and just seem to keep going in circles.

I use a 1GB wireless internet and can either connect to printer or use wirelessly (prefer to use wireless due to location about 5 ft away).

I have tried restarting the laptop, turning printer on/off, etc - nothing seems to help.

Printer properties on laptop show as "unavailable" and whenever I have tried to send a document from laptop, nothing gets through.

Great printer, worked just fine with old (crashed) laptop Windows 7 (32bit)

Hello,

Please try the below steps that should atleast let you start printing..

1.Click Start button on the Computer .
2.then click on Control Panel .
3.then Devices and Printers
4.On top-left, click on Add a Printer
5.Click on Add a Local Printer
6.Then while "Use an Existing port" is selected , select "Virtual USB port ... " then click Next
7.from the Manufacturer list, select HP, and then under Printers list select Deskjet 6980" , then Click next and complete the wizard

Now try printing . It should work.

Hi Lynn_K,

Have your tried using Windows Control Panel to add another instance of the printer?   If the printer software has been installed in the machine, you should be able to find the printer driver when you add a new printer using Windows Control Panel.

I am an HP employee, but I am speaking for myself.

Hi Lynn_K

Welcome to hp forum and thanks for this post.

Can you try to access the embedded web server of your printer? This is to check if your PC and printer is able to communicate.

I also would like to share to you this document to guide you on the installation process and hope it helps.

Setting Up the Printer for a Wireless Network in Windows for the HP Officejet 6000 Printer

Let me know the outcome.

Kind regards,

Yes, i have previously (on old crashed laptop) been able to add it as a new printer, and it was working just fine. I have also used the control panel to add another printer - if i try that again, how would i find the driver?  Thanks so much for your time to offer a suggestion.

Hi - I just removed the printer through control panel, then tried to reinstall it. System found it in the list that came up right away, and tried to install. Again, the printer driver did not install - "Windows cannot locate a suitable driver - contact your administrator . . . "  I am the "administrator" since this is my own laptop that i use for my own real estate business, and i am certainly NOT good at all of this type of issue.

Any other suggestions? should i have by passed the initial list of printers that came up and searched under the "printer is not listed" type of path?

One other thought - the 1GB fiber internet was just installed and i wonder whether the printer could still be trying to connect through the old internet that was Century Link wireless. I now have a Netgear router - would that have any impact on the printer?

Hi Lynn_K,

Please reconnect the printer and PC to the new router (Netgear router). Then, access the printers ip address on your web browser. If it is successful, please try to install the sw again.
