HP OfficeJet Pro 8720
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

I purchased my HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 yesterday and spent most of the day trying to get it to print. Installation appeared to go without a hitch, but nothing happens when I attempt to print.  When I open “See What’s Printing” from “Devices and Printers>HP OfficeJet Pro 8720”, the file name shows up momentarily and disappears.   When I try to open HP Printer Assistant, I get error messages.  When I run HP Print and Scan Doctor, no error is found, but the test print does not happen.  I am able to email files to the printer successfully.  I even loaded a driver on my Linux machine and I can print from there.

I have tried almost everything: uninstalling and reinstalling the software package; unplugging and re-plugging the printer; and patching the driver as in https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03640384

Any help would be appreciated.

Let me take a moment to thank you for posting on the HP Support Forums.

I understand that you have an HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 All-in-One Printer and it does not respond to the print commands (including test prints). However, you are successfully able to email documents to the printer and they print fine. The HP Printer Assistant shows errors and the HP Print and Scan Doctor doe snot show errors. Printing works fine a Linux machine and you have even reinstalled the drivers on Windows. Fabulous analysis. Spectacular diagnosis of the issue before posting. Kudos to you for that. You've done a remarkable job performing the steps.

The printer seems to be fine because it prints the emails and also prints from Linux. The evidence points towards the drivers for Win10. I understand that you have uninstalled and reinstalled the printer drivers already. But I would suggest uninstalling the drivers from the root level because there could be some corrupt files that remain in the computer and cause issues. Please follow the below steps to uninstall the drivers from root level:

  • In Windows, search for and open Programs and Features.
  • Select your HP printer.
  • Select Uninstall.
  • In Windows, search for and open Devices and Printers.
  • In the Devices and Printers window look for your HP Printer. If you see it listed, right-click on it and choose "Delete" or "Remove Device.”
  • Open up the run command with the "Windows Key + R" key combo.
  • Type printui.exe /s and click OK.
  • Click on Drivers tab.
  • Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it click on it and click Remove at the bottom.
  • Select OK.
  • Select Apply and OK on the Print Server Properties windows.
  • Close Devices and Printers.

Once the drivers are uninstalled, you may download and install the drivers from Win10 from this link

Feel free to let me know how it goes. Good luck! 🙂
