Hi there,

I'm really hoping your fix will work as have had the problem for nearly a year - managing with just printer but REALLY annoyed that the scanner, fax AND copier all don't work...

Just want to check the location of the spindle to turn tho cos the one on the lid' (flip up top of printer) looks like a spanner rather than allen key - is it instead the hole this fits into on the top of the flatbed adjacent to the glass?

Sorry if I'm being a numpty.. really hope this is a fix that will work for me!!

Hi NaomiR, from what you have said I'm not sure I understand as I only used a torx driver as in my description, could you pls post a couple of images showing the area on the printer you are talking about

You're a genius 🙂

This fix worked for me after trying everything else first.  However, my first fix only lasted for a moment then the error message returned.  When I went in to take another look, I found that one of the small wheels that carries the light bar had fallen off. After snapping the wheel back into place (it was obvious where it came from), I'm back in biz 🙂

It's a huge plus that I didn't have to ditch the $100 in ink I have stashed.

Thanks a ton for your help!

HP Officejet J4550 error message: scanner failure, cannot copy or send fax.  I took the machine apart and reset the bar to the left, but still does not work.  There is no light at all when it is turned on.  Anyone has any solutions?  Thanks.

I would say that there is a power failure to the light rail creating a fault mode. Not sure I can help as I am pure novice at fixing stuff, good luck someone will have the answer for sure

The cable was disconnected. The rail light came on, but still the same error message: scan failure... Anything else I can try? Thanks.

Hello

I understand you are getting a scanner error.

I have included a document for the scanner error to try.

The scanner mechanism bulb might not turn on when trying to scan, copy, or fax. There are two main causes for this issue:
  • The scanner bulb temperature is too low.
  • There is an internal or external electrical malfunction.

If these steps don't resolve the issue I would recommend to call HP Tech Support for further assistance to see what other options are available for you.
