Here is the FIX (at least it was for me)... I wouldn't have believed it, but it was the surge protector.

It seems HP does not recommend surge protectors on some of the OfficeJet printers.

Go figure.

Doesn't seem logical but hey, is what their support rep told me.

I moved the power wire it a week ago and now it's perfect.

Problem solved. I can leave it all 24/7 and it's always available.

Hope this info helps all.

Cheers.

EDIT: NOT FIXED (SEE BELOW)

Ok thanks I'll try that.

MrUp, odd malfunctions are no fun for anyone.  I'm really glad this seems to be working better for you.

As an Engineer in HP, I'm interested in understanding the source of the problem a little bit better.  If you get a chance, please tell me:

- What AC voltage does your counry run on? (for example, North American homes use 115 V 60 Hz power; Europe is generally on 230 V 50 Hz power)

- What brand & model of power strip were you using?
- What else was plugged into the power strip besides your printer?

ALAS... my report it was fixed was false. Sad but true, today wife sent print job and when I failed again I ran over and saw the dredded "Turn the power off" message again. Awful.

This printer is worse than not having one. If I didn't have it then I'd know I can't print.. now, I don't know.. total mystery. Will I loose the job or will it print?

Time to call support again. I"m thinking HP needs to recall all of these or provide a fireware update.

The setup with my problem is:

North America (110v, 60hz)

Surge protector: Belkin (Model No: BE107200-06

Other things plugged into the power strip: An older Dell desktop pc and monitor, cable modem, wireless router, and speakers.

I don't know if that matters anymore though, because I plugged my Officejet directly into a reliable power outlet, and the problem still occurred. There still seems to be no logical connection with the activity of the printer, and when the problem occurs. The printer had even been on for almost a day without printing anything, but the problem still happened.

Next, I'll try leaving it on for a while, with the wireless turned off to see if that is a cause. I'll post the result.

I reconnected with online support and was asked to follow the steps below... so far, 1 1/2 days and the printer still is working without the error.

  1. unplug: USB, all phone lines, power cord
  2. wait three minutes (I waited a bit more)
  3. plug in only the power
  4. copy a document
  5. send two different print jobs
  6. plugin the phone lines again

What is likely the solution was #2, but I include all the items I was told. Maybe all 6 are required. I would be surprised if the problem is resolved because if all it took was #2, no one would have a problem after turning it for the first time. Nevertheless, I follow instructions completely when support explains what to do. Is hard to type when fingers are crossed on both hands.

Cheers

Thanks, jkntp -

My questions were based on the message that another owner had solved his issue by plugging into the wall directly.  That turned out to not be the solution for him, so my idea won't be helpful.

Well, I haven't posted to this thread in a while since I haven't had this issue re-occur in quite a while.  However, tonight it abruptly decided to manifest itself this evening... twice.  After the second power-cycle it decided to get angry at me because I pulled its power.  Of course, since that's the only way to power down the printer when this error displays, the complaint is rather moot.

I too use a surge protector on this printer, however I use it more as a power switch for when this issue occurs.  I have only the printer plugged into this power strip and I don't have it plugged into a phone line or my PC (it's used as a network printer/scanner in my setup).  If the issues start to occur with more frequency, I will try plugging it directly into the wall and see if that solves anything.  I rarely have issues with mine (seems like I'm in the minority) but it would be nice to be able to remedy the issue so it doesn't happen.

Has anyone out there managed to get the mythical firmware update(r) from HP?  There doesn't seem to be a  way to perform a firmware update with their consumer control panel, so I assume they have some way of doing it independently.

So I have kept my printer plugged into a power stip for almost two days now. Normally, the problem would have occurred at least six times by now.

But this time, I turned the wirless off. So the problem must be originating from the wifi.

Of course, wirless printing is why I bought the printer, so it would be great to have it fixed with a firmware update or something.

not quite two days.. and it's frozen with same error on screen. nothing works. last chance with support and I'm gonna return it as defective.

Just off chat with support. I worry they have no clue. Here is the latest thing suggested to resolve this:

please try these steps on the printer
Press Back, Back, Back, Back (slowly).
Select the Support Menu.
Select Resets Menu.
Select semi full Reset.

I then asked about what happens next. This was the reply:

If the issue persists on troubleshooting steps , the printer can be repaired or replaced
