Yet HP continues to sell the printer with this problem. I bought mine in July and now have more at least 10 times more hours invested in trying to get the thing to work than it is worth. I am tempted to throw it thru the window at Best Buy and go somewhere else to buy an Epson.
The update claims that my printer already has this firmware.

I dave done all the trouble shooting steps and at best, they only worked temporarily.
What finally workrd was upgrading the firmware. But I couldn't...Until...
I had to uninstal the printer, it's hardware and all the software, reinstall and then I was able to upgrade the firmware, and now no issues for about 5 or 6 months, so everything is good now, for now...

I found the solution...at least for mine. I was having the same problem with my HP officejet 4620. It would say something about turning it off woth the power button and then the screen would freeze and I would have to unplug it. Plug it back in and it would look like it was going to work for a bit and do the same thing - heres how I fixed it - I did what it was asking for - after I unplugged it and it restarted and looked like it was going to work I then turned it off by the power button on the front - wait for it to shut down and powered it back on - working great now! Simple fix, but very frustrating after trying to unplug it 10 times! Good luck I hope this helps someone else!

I think your idea of switching off at the power outlet, switching back on then switching off at the power button on the front panel and switching on again seems to be the logical solution to this problem. Let us keep our fingers crossed.

Hi Tutz,
I understand that you are getting an error message on your printer to turn the printer off. Could you please download and Try the HP Print and Scan Doctor for Windows.
Let me know if this helped or if you need further assistance.
Thank you,

I tried everything and more. Even spoke to an IT expert who said to turn the printer off when not in use. The only thing that got it working correctly again was to delete drivers, etc. and start over. Everything is fine now.
