I have my Officejet Pro 8100 connected to my home network via a wired ethernet connection. I'm using Mac OS X 10.9. We have had ongoing issues with the printer remaining accessible through the network. Whenever we set up the connection, it works for a few print jobs, but whenever we shut down the printer, the next attempt to print always fails.

I have just gone through all of the steps to troubleshoot the issue. I went back to square one: re-installed the printer drivers on my MacBook Pro running Mac OSX 10.9; went through all of the wired network connection steps; and now, whenever I send a job to the printer, it registers as receiving the job, and printing it, but the printer itself does not respond.

The display panel on the printer shows it is connected to the network. Printing the network configuration page confirms it is connected to the wired network. Visiting the printer's IP address via my web browser also confirms this. I am able to print a Printer Status Report through the HP Print Utility, so I know the computer, network, and printer are all connected and communicating with each other. However, I cannot print from MS Word, from PDF files, or from anywhere else outside of the HP Print Utility. The job shows up in the print queue, where it shows the progress of each page all the way to 100%, the job disappears, but the printer never prints it.

Please help. This has been an issue since I purchased the printer, and now that my warranty has expired, this is my last hope of fixing it. I am at my wit's end with a device I spent enough money on to expect to work, and it has failed to work properly literally since the day it was purchased. Every attempt to set it up works temporarily, at best. Thanks in advance, and if any more information is needed, please let me know.

Hi DBG345

I understand you are now able to print by USB but not over the network.

There are a couple of things you can try.

Connect the printer back to the router with the ethernet cable.

Disconnect the USB cable.

Get the IP address for the  printer.

Click on the Apple.
Click system preferences, click the print and scan icon, highlight the printer, click on the - sign to delete the printer. Then click the + sign, then select the printer from the list, select the  printer name  first, if that doesn't work try the  airprint driver,(airprint is a preinstalled apple driver with basic funtionality) click on the add button.

The other one you could try is to add the printer as a IP protocal to see if it will work. Go to the apple, system preferences, print and scan, click + button, then select the IP icon across the top, type in the printer's IP address, select jet direct below and then apply.

Try printing.

I would sign up for the HP driver updates. When they are available you will be notified by email.

Hope that helps.

UPDATE: I am able to print using a USB cable directly from my laptop to the printer. Still unable to print wirelessly or via a wired network connection. Please help. 🙂

Thanks so much for your post. I think selecting "HP Jetdirect Socket" is the one thing I didn't do earlier...hopefully the printer & laptop stay "connected" from now on.

Another question: my printer is out of Cyan ink (barely use color printing). Now, whenever I print, even if it's black&white only, the printer won't print the job until I press the flashing "paper feed" button. Once I press it, the job prints just fine. I'm wondering if there is a way around having to physically press that button each time I print. I'm sure replacing the Cyan cartridge would do it, but since I rarely print anything but B&W, it would be nice to be able to print without manually pushing that button for each job.

Thanks!

Hi DBG345

That is great.

The printer can operate only for a short period of time with ‘out of ink’ cartridges. All cartridges must be installed for the printer to operate, and they must have sufficient ink for servicing, in order to prevent the printhead from drying out.

I have provided a document for printing with depleted ink.
