Hi JayW, I managed to take the printhead out. I have 3 questions. 1) how do you clean the head. There is a circuit board at the bottom. I do not think we want to immerse that into water. Which part do you actually clean? Is it the top screen where the cartridge ink pad touchs or sometime at the bottom? You mentioned about the clear plastic strip besides the printhead. Is there a certain position the printead to locate with respect to this plastic strip. I have another problem. The carriage where the head sit on stuck or jammed at the right end of the printer. It was somehow jammed during the head cleaning operation of the printer. Is there any way to clear that?

I did the printhead cleaning procedure outlined below.  On reassembly, the clear plastic strip has no anchor on the side away from the printhead.  The small metal piece had fallen off its achor and I believe that a small part must be broken off of it.  Does anyone have a photo of how this clear plastic strip is anchored?

Thank you so much.

I have the same problem like you guys with the black ink. I've disassembled the printer,I've let bottom of the printhead on an napkin full of isopropyl alcohol and also cleaned it on the upper part where you put the cartrige, then I've re-assembled it and still doesn't work.

I want to ask you some questions about some parts of the printer I think they might have problems. I've taken some photos of them:

In the first photo this is the part that remains after I take the printhead. I saw that the right sponge is dry,I've droped some isopropyl alcohol and it stays on the surface while on the left one it soak without problems. Does someone knows what this sponges are for? Can this be the problem?

In the second photo these hoses are behind the printhead and the one from left seem to have ink inside. Can this dried ink block the one from the cartrige to get on the paper when I try to print?

Thx for your help!

Thanks, this really helped especially as we are told the print head is not removable! I have the Photosmart 5520 and was able to apply your instructions to this model. However, my magenta ink is still not printing and I have called customer service who also verified the print head is non removable! (Did'nt tell them I had removed and cleaned it!)

Yes I did it for me following J's instructions.

Only thing different was removing the screen thingy at the end. the tabs are different but after carefully applying some force, it popped out and nothing broken! Good luck

Thanks Jay W for your crystal clear instructions. I was about to throw away my printer. Now works like new. Much appreciated.
