I received an HP Photosmart for Christmas and tried setting it up today. Everything seemed to go so smoothly, until I tried to print.
So I plugged in the printer, and immediately had it wirelessly connect to our router. That was easy, it connected with no issues.
Next I tried to locate the printer using my Windows 8 laptop. I didn't see it, so I tried downloading the driver and the setup walked me through how to wirelessly connect to the printer. All we needed was the host name or my IP address, which conveniently printed from the printer (I was able to use the touch screen on the printer to access the information) But when I tried putting in the host name, it sais that it was unable to locate the printer, so I tried our IP address, same message.
Somehow I even got through to the point where it said the printer was successfully installed to the network. But yet I still can't print from my windows 8 laptop.
So I switched over to my home computer (Windows Vista) And did the same installations only to receive the same messages. What am I doing wrong?
This is the error I receive:
Unable to Communicate with Printer
The print job could not be completed because the printer is unavailable or not connected. Check your cable or wirless connection, and make sure the printer is powered on and ready.
If you installed this printer by IP address, then you might need to update the IP address. Use the Update IP address item in the Start menu entry for this printer.
Click Help for additional assistance information.
To cancel the print job, click Cancel Print.
I even tried connecting my laptop to the printer as if it were a router. (because it appears as a network option)
I'm sure the solution is simple but for whatever reason I cannot figure it out. Please help! I'd like to get this working for both my windows 8 laptop and my windows vista home computer.

Hey Foxi,
Welcome to the HP Forums!
For the issue of the printer not installing properly on a wireless connection, I have included the document 'The Printer Is Not Found During a Wireless Network Installation'. Please select the operating system that you are working on, and follow through the steps. Do this for both Windows machines.
If you are able to install the software successfully, but still not being able to print due to a communication issue. I have included the document ''Printer is offline' Message Displays on the Computer and the Printer Will Not Print'. I know that this is not the specific error message that you are getting, but the steps will still help.
Please let me know the outcome of the troubleshooting steps.
Thank you

The printer will appear as an option to print from, but when I try to print to it, it just sits there, like there is an error when trying to connect to it.
The solid blue light is on, it's connected to my network just fine, my computer recognizes it, it's not in offline mode, but for some reason I cannot print to it. I followed the instructions in the first post still with no luck

When I use the Print Doctor and it tells me to type in the HOSTNAME or IP for the printer, that is where it doesn't recognize anything, it tells me the name or IP is incorrect or not associated with anything. I've tried resetting the printer and starting from scratch, but I get the same error.

Hi Foxi,
To verify that the printer is connected fully, and being seen. I would like to run a test. First, you will need to print the Wireless Test Report. I have included the steps below for this.
1. Press the Wrench Icon in the top right corner of the printer display
2. Press Wireless
3. Press Print Wireless Test Report
Once the wireless test report has printed. You will need to find the IP address of the printer. This is usually located towards the bottom portion of the page. You will then need to open up your web browser (Internet Explorer), and type the IP address in the address bar at the top of the page. When you type in the IP address, and press Enter, what does Internet Explorer pull up?
Before moving to the next set of troubleshooting, I would like to confirm if you are running Windows 8 (as previously posted), or Windows 7 (shown in the screen shots). I have included the document 'Which Windows operating system am I running?'.
Regards.

I can print the test page, and when I try to type in that IP address nothing comes up. It won't load up anything and then times out. I tried with chrome, IE and firefox
I know for sure that I am running on windows 8.

Hey Foxi,
Thank you for the information. When you type the IP address in, if the printer is connected to the router correctly. The page that should appear is your printer, and information about your printer.
I have included the document 'Printer Does Not Maintain Wireless Connection'. Please follow through the outlined steps, and let me know the outcome of the troubleshooting.
Thank you.

Hi margaretpollett,
Welcome to the HP Forums!
I would like to be able to assist you with getting the Photosmart 5520 to your computer. I would just need a bit more information first.
1. Is the computer Mac, or Windows?
2. What version of operating system do you have? I have included the two documents 'Which Windows operating system am I running?', and 'Finding your OS X version and build information'.
3. What error message are you getting when you try to install the printer?
4. Is the printer full featured software installed?
Looking forward to your answers. 🙂

I tried typing in that IP address but the computer comes up with nothing, the printer is fully connected to our router with no problems, it maintains the connection just fine. That's why I'm so baffled.
Another problem I've encountered is ever since I created the printers network, my computer automatically tries to connect to it as if it is my home router (like it tries to access the internet through the printer) It's not too serious of an issue, it's just annoying.
The printer appears as an option to print to on both my home computer and laptop, but every time I try it just says "pending" in the progress page.
Everything is plugged in correctly, everything is installed correctly, firewall is adjusted properly, I can see the printer on my screen, the printer is continuously connected to the internet with no issues, it just won't print 😞
