Nice to see that I'm not the only sole having grand problems with the HP C7280! I've tried everything imaginable to get this darn machine to print correctly, but all to no avail. The other profound problem I've had with this particular printer is the paper jams!!! Every day, the 1st page that I send to print causes the paper to jam. The jam is easily resolved, but I must cancel the printout and reorder the page to print, otherwise I'll not see another page printed from this printer. The C7280 was my 4th or 5th HP printer, but it is certainly the last. I will purchase a new printer today, but it will be from another manufacturer. HP's lack of support for their printer products has forced me to choose another vendor for my printer needs. Good riddens HP!!!!

Thank you for the link. I've been having this same problem - no black printing or copying - on my Officejet 6310 for several days. I changed to a new HP cartridge, received a "cartridge error" message, and then - bam - no black printing.
I accessed the recommended link, and tried step #4, as suggested. It SORT of worked, so I realized that this was a cartridge-related ink flow problem, nothing exotic. Harkening back to the old ball point pen days, when you had only one good pen and it had better last, I tried this old trick: I headted the black cartridge for a few minutes with my hair dryer, burped it by banging it label side down on the desk a few times, then proceeded with step #4 again.
After the recommended two-hour period, I inserted the cartridge in the printer, and proceeded to clean, intermediate clean, then prime the printer heads (follow the steps on your printer's toolbox page).
Voila - works good as new. For how long, I don't know, but I just love this machine and really did not want to replace it.
Thanks to all for sharing your tips. Hope this might work for you.

Oops. Thought my message would link via reply to the post with the link It did not.
Here is the link with "step #4."

I note in step 4 in the link in the previous post that the ink cartridge can be blocked by sediments collecting in the nozzle area. So - poor quality HP ink and a design fault that allows the ink to clog the cartridge.
I'm still using the continuous ink system I bought last April (see page 5) for £66 - still loads of ink left from the initial purchase and no blockages. Saved a fortune in ink and, just as importantly, haven't contributed any more to HP's profits.

I also have a HP C7180 photosmart printer that will not print black. I also have changed the black ink cartridge, and only ever used genuine cartidges! I have done the paperclip thing (suggested above) and also tried blowing and sucking the two tubes that would normally plug into the cartridge. Nothing has worked and my printer is a brick. A few kilos of useless molded plastic!
I suppose I am to guess, by HPs inactivity on this thread that they either:
- have no idea what is wrong with their printer,
- have no desire to fix it in the hope that they'll sell us a new one - fat chance!,
- know what is wrong but do not wish to admit it lest customers (people who have kindly given them custom) ask, rightfully, for the problem to be corrected.

i have the same problem too. with two brand new hp printers and several brand new original hp cartridges for both printers. The black cartridge only prints about 30 pages. HP customer support where I'm from is terrible. the retailers wont honor the limited warranty on the ink cartridges despite it saying 'limited warranty' on the box. The HP people say to contact the retailers. The retailers always say the cartridge is empty but it couldn't be so because the introductory cartridges even print more pages. I am so frustrated because there seems to be no remedy for this printer/ink problem. My latest Hp printer is a d4280, and it's experiencing the same problem. All the other functions of the printer work fine. It just wouldn't print with black properly, and soon the ink fully fades out. I would really appreciate it if someone from admin can respond to this problem. Thank you.

I have been reading the crazy amount of posts here on black ink not printing. Wow, how is HP still in business? It seems like the “real solutions” that work are like voodoo magic. It doesn’t seem like the real problems are reasonable issues that consumers should have to deal with. HP has some explaining to do.

There are hundreds of posts on the internet about the HP won't print black ink problem. I have a 3210 All-in-one and was having the same problem. I have spent hours working on this and reading tons of posts. I removed all the current HP software, unplugged my printer, disconnected the USB connection. Then I reinstalled the original software from the disk that came with the printer, plugged the printer back in, reconnected the USB.and tried printing something. Didn't work. Then I took the advice of someone to use a syringe and use non-acetone nail polish remover to unplug the black ink pipes. I did it several times and even did the “push pull” thing to really work it, I felt like a Plumber! After about 5-times of doing this and about 5 times of Hold down four buttons at the same time ( OK, Cancel, Black , Color ) and turn the power off, I finally got black ink to work again!!!!

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but the printhead is inside the printer and cannot be removed. When you open up the printer and see all the cartridges, I believe it's up to the right above the black cartridge. You can gently clean it, wipe it down with a Q-tip but that's it. Read earlier posts on how to clean the black ink cartridge tank and the two long cylinders that extract the ink from the cartridge to the printer. Best of luck. Keep doing that and printhead clean and alignment and it will eventually work again. You can't let it lie dormant for more than a week.
