I tried the hpqdirec.exe tip suggested above and the first page scanned ok but the program froze in the middle of the second page.  I have downloaded and installed the latest drivers; I have tried running the HP scan diagnostic utility; I have tried all the suggestions mentioned in this topic -- it still doesn't scan.  I'm giving up and going back to my old Epson all-in-one.  It works.  My next printer purchase will definitely not be an HP.

I have a simliar problem as well, but it's in 64-bit.

After scanning into Picasa, Windows reports this crash error/report.

However, since the images are properly imported into Picasa, I'm not giving this too much thought yet, but would like to see a solution still.... Uh... One that does not involve buying a new printer...

Hi,

I do experience the same problem.

However, after reading some comments & due to the fact I do have three different PC (Sony VAIOZ, Sony VAIO AR & Allienware) both on W7 64Bit only one PC having the problem with the same printer,  I can state

  • it makes no difference Wired or Wireless
  • the same software has been installed (full suite)

HP Support is a nightware, has always been and most of the times you do not receive any answer

Regards,

Matthias

Hello, i have a multifunction hp product, the j5780 All in one.

i have the same error described at the top of this forum. This bug is generated on Windows 7 x64. Im using the "patch" available for download in the hp site, but the problem persist.

Thanks, i hope HP can make some patch that avoid this bug in their software (and make a "little" faster the "Solution Center".

I found either a  partial fix or a temporary work around. (Dec 2010)

I have an HP7280 and a brand new clean install of Windows 7 64 bit.  HP sotware installed fine, but I get the same error repeated in this chain while trying to scan either wirelessly or via USB (HP scan application has stopped working).  Like most reports here, my scans ARE accomplished and the files are saved, but the error message is a nuissance.  I'm still shocked that this issue has not been addressed by HP after nearly 1 year, and also that I have not been able to find the root cause or sufficient workarounds from other sources on line. I tried every related fix I could find including uninstall/reinstall, HP patch for missing scanned files, installing via USB vs wireless, turning off/on firewalls and antivirus, etc.  I finally stumbled upon something that appears to work. I found a similar thread/error for an HP AIO that started working after installing the printer a second time in Windows 'add a device'.

http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printer-All-in-One-Install-and/C7280-Successfully-installs-on-Windows-7...

Here is my fix: After installing the printer software and installing the printer with a wireless connection, and confirming that the scan function was still malfunctioning, I then connected the printer via USB. Windows recognized the printer and installed the device as 'HP 7200 Copy 1' and triggered the HP install software to run again. After cancelling through most of this repeat HP software  install, I ended up with two copies of HP 7200 in Windows 'devices and printers' window, one connected via USB and one via wireless.  Now, when I open HP solution center, I have two printer icons show up on the left hand side. I can switch between either one, and whichever printer is NOT selected displays with a warning explanation mark.  Now when I chose the wireless version (1st printer installed) and scan I get the same error message, but if I switch to the USB version and scan, the system works fine with no errors.  I renamed the devices in Windows as 'Wireless HP7200' and 'USB HP 7200' and left the USB version as default and I'm able to scan and print without errors!

Now, while this workaround will not help those who need to scan via wireless and/or do not want to use the USB connection, there is hope. During my troubleshooting, uninstalling and reinstalling, etc, I did get an interim condition where I had the USB installed first (with scanner warnings) and added a second wireless version in windows which scanned withOUT the error. However, I was still trying to obtaint the optimum configuration and had to clean up the install, and I could not repeat that setup. When I finally got a relatively clean configuration that worked, I gave up and left it alone. I considered deleting the first printer (wireless) to see if USB version would work on its own but because I was getting the scan error on previous 'solo' USB installs, I didn't risk it.

I'd be very interested if anyone else is able to repeat my situation or investigate further to identify the root cause and a real fix. What I found indicated that 1) installing a second version of the printer was key to eliminating the error. I also discovered that changing  printer properties via windows 'devices and printers' had mixed results in the HP software. For instance, when I renamed the printers in windows printer properties, HP Solution Center would not reflect that change until AFTER a reboot. However, if I tried to change the printer port in windows (i.e. change printer from USB to wireless port) that change would NOT show up in Solution Center even AFTER a reboot.  I hope that helps someone, but also hope that the one HP tech or the mysterious dll fix gets posted here to permanantly fix this issue.

C309N will not scan.  HP imaging device not found.  This warning repeats itself unlimited times rendering new alienware unusable.  Scan used to work fine until recently.  I tried all the usual like disable firewall and A/V.  No help.  Many hours troubleshooting with tech support.  No help.  I bought this printer because the 6500 would not work wirelessly.  I use Win 7 64 bit.

I have the C7280 and I'm experiencing similar problems as everyone else after buying a new computer with Win7 64 bit.  When I try using the HP Solution Center to scan, the scan seems to start, but then it aborts--HPSC software stops responding and I have to close it with task mgr.  I have tried uninstalling software and reinstalling, all the rebooting system and printer--nothing works.  Tried the diagnostic tool and it stopped on the Win(WIA) scan part and just says to reboot everything.  Tried using Paint and Win fax and scan and neither works.  Tried the Hpiscnapp.exe and it does the same thing as HPSC.  The only way I have successfully scanned is by using the scan menu on the printer console using "PIC to file."  It would not save the file to my PC, so I had to insert a USB Flash drive into the printer.  It scanned to the flash drive.  There are no options with this type of scan, so it is not a viable work around.  HP hasn't fixed this problem since Vista first came out, so I don't look for a solution from them.

I loved my AIO with XP--it worked beautifully.  However, my Windows XP totally crashed once when an HP update was downloading, and it was a terrible mess.  Had to reformat my drive and reload windows and everything else.  I blamed HP for that crash.  Their software is trash.  As soon as I use up my stash of ink for this printer, I will buy an Epson!

I agree. There are some good deals on HP printers this Christmas but I'm so disappointed in HP's lack of a fix or even a response that I'm not about to buy one.

I also setup and use the printer with a wireless conncetion only. Could it be the culprit...?

Can't believe that HP is ignoring this issue for so long. I believe the people affected are much more than those posted in this thread, but since it just keep working (at least for me, the crash is after the scan is done), people just don't bother to report it.

BTW, C4385 here.

I intend to pursue a colour laser MFP in future, wonder if I should stick with HP or go somewhere else......?

Well, after a week or two of successful scanning via USB with no error messages, today the culprit returned (see my previous post above). Scanning via USB now gives me the same error after the scan is complete. I have not downloaded nor installed any new software, so no idea why it worked before and not now. Very frustrated that this issue has not been addressed by HP, but I know complaining here will have no effect 😞
