For a very quick summary, skip to the bottom.

When scanning using a HP Scanjet 7000, it frequently crashes. When using paperport 11 I have no problems so I believe the issue is with the HP scan software. I continue to use SDSS because it has a hole removal tool and superior ability to handle pages of mixed size and thickness. I am currently using:

HP Smart Document Scan Software

Version: 3.10.0000

BuildID: AR-1057-823-1204.1

I run Windows 7 Pro 64 bit.

After scanning 250 double sided sheets it freezes. This is a regular occurence. It can be avoided by restarting the scan software before it locks up such as closing and reopening SDSS every 200 sheets. The symptoms are SDSS stopping in the middle of a job and requiring a force quit through windows task manager. I also need to power off and on the scanner. This problem occurs when installed in 32 or 64 bit folder and when run in windows virtual xp mode. Unfortunately, this is the less severe problem.

I contacted HP tech support to help with the following problems. They suggested a power reset and it resulted in the problem listed above. Since the freezing is predictable, it is manageable, but the errors below were aggravating and a waste of my time. HP support believes these are windows error codes although they appear in a HP Smart Document Scan window.

The program still will infrequently crash and give error codes. The interval between crashes is as little as 10 pages. I can not find any info on the error codes beyon the pop up box. They are:

A scanner error has occurred. Be sure the scanner is properly connected, then turn the scanner off and back on. EX = 1000

This is relatively uncommon. It requires the scanner to be powered off and on to continue scanning.

Internal Error. Refer to the extended error code. EX = 2052

This is the most common error code. I still occasionally get this code even in as little as 10 pages after initial power up of the scanner. I can continue scanning after restarting SDSS but not powering off the scanner but it usually results in 2059 so I also restart the scanner.

Internal Error. Refer to the extended error code. EX = 2059

This typically occurs after recieving code 2052 but not restarting he scanner with the power switch.

The program would also lock up as described in the first section but at a much higher frequency, usually less than 100 pages.

As a recap:

SDSS locks up every 250 pages whiles scanning using a HP Scanjet 7000. How do I fix it?

What do error codes EX=1000, EX=2052, and EX=2059 mean? Are they SDSS or windows errors?

Here is a screenshot of error EX = 2052 and frozen program. Note in the second picture in the lower right it says "scanning page 27..." indicating that the program is frozen in the middle of a job unlike the top where it stopped and gave an error code.

I was scanning actual pages but covered the content.

Ex = 2052 used to occur a couple times a day but I now rarely see it but it popped up twice today.

The second is the error that occurs every 250 pages scanned.

Hello I_scan_a_lot

The Scanjet series of scanners are commercial products. I suggest posting in the HP Business Support forum for a better chance at finding a solution as this is the HP consumer boards and there are less people familiar with this line of products.

You may find the Commercial Scanjet board here.

I had a technician with these same issues, swapping out to a high quality USB cable corrected the issue with him after I told him from these forums it seemed to be a communication issue. I'd recommend trying that as well for your issue.
