Regardling the "sealing" of cartridges. I bought my HP8610, installed the setup cartridges, set up the printer and immediately removed them from the printer and placed them in a zip lock bag replacing them with CIS cartridges. The setup cartridges sat for three months until the Sept 13 forced firmware download.
The setup cartridges worked perfectly after I put them back in the printer on Sept 13th. I removed them on Oct 12 and reinstalled the CIS. The CIS aftermarket cartridges sat for a month in a zip lock bag and worked perfectly.
I have about 20 HP10 and HP11 cartridges that I refill at home. The sit unsealed and NOT in a baggie until needed. I have four or five for each color and I go through ALL of them before I have a marathon refilling session. These cartridges sit unsealed in a box under my sink for months, sometimes over a year before I put them into my HP CP1700. Then, they sit for the same amount of time empty until I refill them all at once.
I HAVE NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH AN INK CARTRIDGE DRYING OUT AFTER IT WAS REMOVED FROM ITS ORIGINAL PACKAGE AND/OR AFTER ANY TAPE WAS REMOVED FROM THE OUTLET PORT. I do use a Q-Tip to clean the port but that's because I don't want accidently get some ink on my hands while handling the cartridges.
I don't think you have anything to worry about.
