How can I print on 3x4 card stock.

The HP Officejet Pro 8710 printer has predefined printing shortcuts. Index card 3x5 is factory set to Plain Paper, Thick and Borderless ON - but when I attempt to print I get the following error message:  "There are one or more conflicting settings. One of the conflicting settings is: Borderless Printing ON and Media Type: Plain Paper Thick."  If I select "Keep this setting, and I will change it later" I am unable to print. If I change the factory default it becomes a "User Specified Print Settings" which does not appear to allow me to select the 3x5 (or custom 3x4) paper size. I can print to 3x5 index cards OK but something in the printer is sensing the shorter 3x4 paper. I have tried placing a3x5 index card under the 3x4 and placing a block to stop the 3x4 card slipping without success.

The short answer is that you cannot have what you want in this case.

Printer:

HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 All-in-One Printer

Full Feature Software:

OJ8710_Full_WebPack_1881.exe

(157.6 MB)

From the How-to Section:

Creating Custom Paper Sizes

Specifications indicate that the printer can handle custom sizes, it can print on Index cards; the printer cannot print borderless on Index cards.

Borderless printing is available for A4, A5, and B5 sizes - plain paper only.

Create a Custom Size shortcut for your cards -- use one of the Index cards as the template so the printer knows the media type (kind of paper) will be the slightly thicker Index card medium.

Minimize the borders in the document you are creating to print on the cards.  That means, if you are using Word to create the document, set the margins to narrow or custom.  Do not set the margins in the document to less than the restrictions set by the printer (.13 inch per side).

Print margins

To avoid printing errors, the document margins must match (or exceed) the margin settings listed for the portrait orientation in the following table.

It appears that the 8710 which replaces the 8600 is not an upgrade but a downgrade. Which HP OfficeJet do I need to buy to be able to print on 3x4 card.
