Hi
I Have read that the officejet 8600 has a cartridge protection feature that can be disabled through the tool box. I have been through all the settings in the tools on the printer its self and can not find it, i have also trawled through all sorts of HP stuff on my computer and can find no tool box or cartridge protection feature.

But has come across several articles similar to this on the net. If someone out there can give me a blow by blow method of achieving this, then i shall be eternally grateful.

Is your printer still in warranty? You can check with HP's warranty tool here.
If this printer is connected via network you can enter the IP address of the printer in your browser and change the settings there. You can find the printer's IP address from the front panel, click on the wireless icon.
This turns off marking the cartridge so they cannot be used in another printer, it does not allow printing with cartridges from another printer that have already been marked. From the web page: "The feature allows you to mark all Genuine HP ink cartridges used in your printer so that they cannot be used in any other printer. If someone tries to use your Protected Cartridge in another printer, cartridge use will be blocked and they will be told it can only be used in the original printer."

I just read Bob Headrick's answer and it sure looks like a good one - but that is not on my printer. I have an Officejet Pro 8600 Plus. I've spent most of the day trying to get this CISS system to work. Sounds like such a terrific idea and a money saver at that!

The screen shot above was not from the printer, it is from the PC. My printer is also an HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus. You need to enter the printer's IP address in the browser to get to the printer's Embedded Web Server. The IP address can be found from the printer's front panel.

I would not expect cartridge protection to have any effect on use of a CIS, but a CIS may have other issues including incorrect ink levels. HP does not recommend (or warranty) third party, you would need to contact your supplier for support.
