I would like to know if anyone knows how to disable the power saving mode. My printer is a "Deskjet 4625 e series and my  OS is Windows 7 Home edition. If HP didn't provide this capability, it's a very poor design. I need my printer on contiuously, 24/7.

cp26,

If your printer is in the power saver mode you should still be able to print to it and have it print without you turning it on. That is unless you are having trouble with it turning off on you. If you are i have attached  a link that will help with that. Otherwise let us know if you have problems when trying to print to it while in the power saver mode.

Hi,

I have the exact same printer and I have the exact same problem. Printer is set up as wireless installed from the network on a Win7 Pro x64. For a week it drove me nuts until this morning I found a solution.

This seems to be a problem common to many HP printer models and there is no solution whatsoever (that I could find) on the forums. For a quick list of similar problems (looks like HP 4500 is a champ) see http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/forums/searchpage/tab/message?filter=location&location=forum-board%3APr...

First, some things I've understood so far. The HP setup software installs the printer via a proprietary printer port (HP printer discovery something). This communicates on the other end (on the printer) with some also proprietary HP server. This one is at fault for the printer lock and it only works again after a power-off/power-on operation of the printer. It seems that it doesn't have much to do with the Power saving mode (even if in the beginning I thought so), as this mode is set-up to trigger after 5 minutes on my printer but after 10, 15 or 20 minutes I could print just fine (seems that the printer comes out from that mode). It's the HP server on the printer that it's locking after a longer time (guaranteed over night but could be less, I could not find the exact time it takes).

However, there is another way to install the printer, namely as a TCP/IP (port) printer. For this purpose one must use the Add printer wizard and choose a Local Printer then when asked about the port, choose Create a new port of type Standard TCP/IP port. Then use the printer name or IP address when asked, choose the right driver (under section Hewlett Packard and not under section HP) and you should be good to go. I tested this procedure on both Win7 and WinXP and it works - meaning that (having 2 printers installed, one by the HP setup via the proprietary port and one via the standard TCP/IP port) when I print on the printer installed by the HP setup it will fail but when printing on the printer installed as TCP/IP it will work. The reason is that the TCP/IP port communicates with a different server on the printer - that is obviously working (not locked) even when the (other) server is locked.

Some more words about the locking: the printer reports it's functional, the wireless connection is just fine, I can access the EWS (Embedded Web Server). It will just throw an error when actually trying to print or scan.

Regarding the scanner: the above solution (install printer as TCP/IP port) will not solve the scan part. This will only be solved by a power-off/power-on operation. However, this shouldn't be the biggest problem as for placing the paper(s) in the scanner/ADF you really need to be physically near the printer so it's easy to power-off/power-on (but still annoying).

I really hope this helps someone!

Hi,

Over the last 16 years I've used mostly (and recommended to others) HP printers and I've been pretty happy - until now. This (not sure it's really a) power save problem - but rather a printer (internal) server lock problem is affecting a lot of people - me included. So far, reading on the forums the answers of HP techs I've been amazed how unhelpful they were.

It would be a real shame for me to stop using HP printers and tell others to do so based on these recent experiences I had.

If you would be so kind to do something meaningful (and make a difference as well) you could/should contact the developers of the printer's (internal) server (that is used to communicate with printer clients when installing the printer with the HP setup tools - using the HP printer discovery something port). Explain them that a lot of (unhappy) customers experience problems with a server lock (power save mode or not, let them identify the source of the problem) but if the printer is installed as a TCP/IP printer (and most probably communicating with a different server on the printer) than this lock is not happening, while at the same time the other server is locked. Basically, I have the same printer installed twice (HP Setup and TCP/IP port) on my computer. Printing on the HP setup printer fails, printing on the TCP/IP printer works.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation!

P.S. Please only reply when/if you can announce a specific date for a firmware update.
