@Lezzles Do you have the same printer as the OP, if not, here's what I'll need to help you better:

Note: Please ensure the complete product name/number for a quicker response from the community, as we need to know what we are dealing with to provide an accurate solution:

Remember: Do not share any of your personal information such as serial, phone number, email ID, etc.

Meanwhile, If you've already installed the full feature software/driver from the HP website for your printer, here's what you need to do

Step 1: Click on the "Search" or windows button.

Step 2: Enter "Printers" in the search box. This will pull up a set of search results. Select "Printers and Devices" from the results.

Step 3: Right-click on the printer you want on your desktop.

Step 4: Select "Create Shortcut." A shortcut will appear on the desktop.

P.S: Welcome to HP Community 😉

I just installed a new MF479 on my new computer with Windows 10.  When I reboot I can see my printer in the HP Smart app and can scan, but after closing the app I can no longer see my printer when I reopen it.  I also can't figure out how to get the scan shortcut on my desktop.  I followed the directions an HP employee provided in another post, but I didn't have the options available that they said should be there.
