Greetings,

A client has 3 HP LaserJet 200 MFP M276nw on the wireless LAN. He wants to distinguish them so that people know which printer is in which office. There is no server and they are not shared so I cannot name it using this traditional method.

Page 133 of the manual says you can change the name through System tab > Device Information then change whatever the default name is in the Device Status field. However, there is no Device Status field. I have tried this also through the Tool Box utility. I have also tried to update the firmware, but it is current.

I changed the name through the embedded web server System tab> Device > Device Description, but that change is only reflected in that field nd just above the tabs in the gui.

If I go to the Networking tab > Network Identification, the default name is NPI6A6BFE. If I change it, it just reverts to the default name.

How can I give these devices more friendly names so users know which is where?

Thanks!

The NPI6A6BFE I assume is the host name which can be changed and saved but that will still not be what you want. You need to the printers page, right click on the icon and just use the rename button to change the name.

Actually changing NPI6A6BFE would be great, but it won't save, it jujst reverts back to that name.

Thank you for your reply, but users should not have to add the printer, then print a test page to see where it comes out, then rename it on their machine accordingly. Can you imagine having to do this in a large office where there are 50 printers, or 100 and the CEO comes out of his office wondering about all the test pages his printer randomly spits out?

I want them to be able to use the Add printer feature in Windows or MAc, and choose it by an intuitive name.  The manual indicates it will work this way, but the field they say to change does not exist.

Hopefully HP wil have some worthwhile input here?

Are you applying the setting after making the change. If you exit without applying then the setting will not change.
