HP 4520
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I think this is a different problem than the "scan to e-mail" problem I'm seeing trending (mid-May 2016). But maybe not.

We have a brand-new HP Pavilion laptop, running Windows 10. We've attached to a brand-new HP 4520 printer/scanner, connected via wireless. The daily user is my 96-year-old father-in-law. He's been using computers for 25 years, but it's getting harder for him to learn new ways to do things. He resisted giving up his Windows Vista system until it physically died.  At 96, do YOU want to learn new ways?

On his old system, he could scan directly to his AOL Desktop Mail software -- using either a button on the printer (an HP 3520) or from the HP software icon on the desktop. He would scan a photo, and up would pop a brand-new AOL e-mail message with the scan already attached, so he could send to his friends, children, grandchildren, etc.

On the new system, if we scan from the printer console or from the desktop software, the default Windows Outlook e-mail opens with the attachment. How do I get the system to open AOL Desktop Mail instead?

I have already set AOL Desktop Mail as the default "mailto" program (and tested that if I click on a "mailto" link in a webpage it works). I've created a Mail Profile with access to the AOL account through IMAP, but sending from the Outlook message doesn't seem to work -- nothing got sent.

I've associated filetype so that any .eml file opens AOL Desktop Mail.

I'm guessing there's some registry item I need to edit -- maybe "OUTLOOKMAIL" or "MS-UNISTORE-EMAIL" which both seem to be associated with Windows Live Mail? Or something else?

Put another way: When the printer sends a message to the computer to create a new e-mail message, what is it calling for?

I KNOW the workaround is to scan to a file, open an e-mail message, click on the paperclip, navigate to the scan, and attach it. But that process gets my father-in-law confused. (I said he's been using computers for 25 years. I didn't say he understood the difference between programs, files, desktops, folders, etc. I'm truly amazed at how well he uses the computer, but I get that we need to find the simplest possible way for him to accomplish something, and once we've found it, don't change it. So don't suggest switching e-mail clients, either.)

Any suggestions? Thanks.

Hi bvlew100,

Thank you for using HP support forums.

I can understand your problem. I would not want my grandparent to learn something new as well. I will try to read up more on how to set the scan to email setup.

You mentioned that you have already set AOL Desktop Mail as the default "mailto" program. How did you do that?

My current understanding is that the scan to email setting is not in the printer but in the laptop/PC.

Hello,

Please try the below steps on changing the default email client on Windows 10.  Hope it helps!

  1. Click on the Start Menu Windows 10 Start Icon button bottom-left
  2. Now click on the Settings Windows 10 Settings menu item
  3. Then click the System Windows 10 Settings - System icon
  4. Now click on the Default apps menu item
  5. Look for the Email heading
  6. Click on the current default email client just below heading
  7. The Choose an app menu should now be in view
  8. Click on the email client you wish to make the default app
  9. Close the Settings window
  10. All done!

Do note that HP Scan requires Microsoft Outlook (any version) to be installed in order to support sending scanned images to Email.  Then, you can use other email client to scan images by setting it as new default client.

Thanks and regards,

Hi

Thanks Meg0316 for your step by step advice

I am revisiting this problem, and trying to update Windows 10 to recognise Outlook 2016 as the default email app, but the scanner still causes the previous MS Outlook to open in order to send the scans.

Should I be looking at some other settings?

Thanks

Dear All

I am still struggling with this issue on our Windows 10 system.

The default email client for Windows has been changed to Outlook2016, and yet the HP scanner still attempts to open Windows Live Mail (the previous client), even though I am unable to find anything pointing to it.

I also checked in the registry and Outlook2016 is shown as the default.

Finally, I tried to set up a shortcut from wlmail.exe to Outlook2016, but this crashed the scan to email routine completely.

I have read in other postings that wlmail.exe may be hard coded into the HPscanner app. If this is the case what should be done?

Any suggestions what could be done next? Please!
