Just bought the HP Officejet Pro 8610 all-in-one for the local Historical Society. Neither the laptop nor the printer will be connected to the Internet. The printer will only be used for printing reports, scanning images, etc.

I have just removed the instruction manual to familiarize myself with the connecting procedure but I notice there are several references that require internet access.

Is there a work-around that allows me to install/connect the printer without requiring access to the internet?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Hi,

Given a special environment USB probably is the way to go. You don't need special USB cable. Your printer has two USB port, one at the front (#4) and one at the back. You have to use the USB port at the back (#13)

And the USB cable is the one similar to the following one:

The "flat" end for your computer/laptop and the "round" (well nearly round) is for the printer. Please check the box first, depending on where you are (country, region), the cable may be inside the box already.

Hi,

How many computer will be using the printer ? If only one the USB (you may have to buy a cable) is the way to go. You can also use wireless direct to print but this is not reliable:

Hi,

To answer your question, there is only one laptop to which the printer will be connected.

I have read the instructions provided in the link you gave but I fear that I may find myself at the site and running into trouble without access to the internet.

Somewhere within the link is this

NOTE: "In order to establish a wireless communication between the product and the computer, the network settings should be configured initially by using a wired connection."

Do you think I could take both the laptop and printer home and configure the setup via my internet connection?

The only question I have, will the printer work when it is returned to the building that has no internet?

You mentioned I might be able to make the connection by using USB cables.  Do these cables have a special name?

Thanking you in advance.

Ursula
